A Professional Furnituremaker Discusses The Woodworking Hand Tools Experience

I feel fortunate that I was able to get a solid base in hand woodworking during the early part of my career. I got in on the tail end of a traditional cabinetmaking program at an old vocational college run by a master woodworker who had learned his trade in his father's carriage shop. Each student was assigned a bench and a drawer containing the basic hand tools: a plane, a backsaw, chisels, a small hammer, a square, and a marking gauge. As we worked at the benches, the teacher and his helpers walked around the shop, offering assistance. Although there were some heavy machines in the shop, the predominant atmosphere was one of bench work. Our first task was to make a half-lap joint from a rough piece of poplar using only the tools from our drawer. We started by planing one face flat and from that face squarely an edge. Then we marked and planed to the finish thickness, cut the piece in half squarely, and outlined the joint. Next, we sawed and chiseled the joint, all the while checking for square. Once we felt we had a good joint, an instructor would inspect it from all sides for square, flatness, and fit. This exercise demanded intense concentration and it provided the groundwork for my attitude toward woodworking. Attention to detail, a respect for handwork, and the importance of good joinery provided firm cornerstones.

Twenty years later, as a professional furnituremaker, I still that it is important for me to maintain a balance between handwork and machine work. Being in business sets some of the limits. You may not want money to dictate how you  work, but it is a major concern if you are going to work wood for a living. The question of whether a particular process should be accomplished by hand or machine raises a number of questions: Which method is more efficient? Which produces better work-or makes a more valuable finished piece?

I feel that dovetails,for example,can be done best by hand. Even with the new generation of jigs, the extra-fine hand-cut look cannot be achieved with a machine; nor is jigging much faster when there are only a few joints to do;Hand-cut dovetails will also give a piece a much greater investment value. On the other hand, planing a rough board by hand doesn't usually add value. It may be rewarding personally , but hand planing isn't more efficient than using a thickness planer, nor are'the results better.

There are many occasions when it is quicker to pick up a hand tool than to set up a machine for a simple operation. I usually cut tenon shoulders with a handsaw and chisel rather than working with a band saw or a table saw. But I taper table legs on the jointer, instead of bandsawing to a line and hand planing the legs smooth. Finding the right balance of hand and power tools is a highly individual matter, balancing the combination of efficiency and value that suits each of us.

Getting Started With Woodworking Tools

Woodworking is a great hobby to get into.  Many people worry about getting started because they imagine that the tools are very expensive.  There are a lot of expensive tools on the market, but as you get started, you'll realize that a lot of the fancy tools out there are not necessary for completing many projects.

Choose a project that takes minimal tools to get started.  As your skills progress, you may want to add in a tool here or there to start your collection.  You don't need to go out and buy all of the tools that you'll ever need in one fail swoop.  You will probably need a chisel, a hacksaw, some clamps, and a level or square to get started.  Just do a little research and determine what you need before you go to the store.  The woodworking section may seem overwhelming at first.

As you progress, you may start looking into some power tools.  Not all are created equal.  To avoid wasting money on tools that will break or not perform how you need them to, look at customer reviews or talk to a friend that has tried them.  Cheaper doesn't always mean lower quality, however.  You could get some great deals on quality power tools by finding last year's model on sale.  You can find tools on auction sites for a lot cheaper than in retail stores.  If it is a real specialty tool, you might be better off renting or borrowing it instead of investing in something that you may rarely use.

The next thing to consider is the type of wood that you use.  Softer woods are easier to work with and are recommended for beginners.  Hard woods are harder to work with and cost more, so mistakes can be more costly.  Pine is generally cheap and easy to work with.

Before you go investing in a lot of woodworking books, check out what your library has to offer.  There are often times a lot of useful books at the library that you can check out and use for tips and free plans.  There are also a lot of sites on the internet that offer free plans, along with tips and reviews from people that have tried them.  Save that money for the tools that you will inevitably want to buy!

If you want to build furniture, cabinets, shelves, or other household items, it might serve you well to research "joinery" before you begin.  There are many different ways to join two pieces of wood together.  The type of joint that you use will depend on the intended purpose of the project.  The more weight the joint will need to hold, the more sturdy and secure the joint will need to be.  Don't be afraid to learn how to use dowels for joints.  Using a <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);" href="http://www.goodwoodinc.com/"title="Dowel">dowel</a> rod to create a joint gives it strength and helps you to create a smooth look, without a lot of screws or nails showing.

Woodworking is a hobby that can be turned into a business venture. Woodworking is the art of creating things that are decorative and functional using wood as a material. It is a very labor-intensive occupation but the use of modern techniques and equipment lighten the load a bit.
Wood is the woodworker's most important tool. Without wood, your woodworking tools would have no job and there could be no end product. The first trick to woodworking is knowing how to properly cut plywood, and that involves using the right tools and manipulating the wood in the appropriate way. Different cutting jobs require different blades. Blades differ depending on the number of teeth, the width, angle and the rake of the blade. Before cutting, assess which blade best suits your cutting needs and which one will help you to produce the cleanest cut possible. When you are ready to cut, score the cut first by running the plywood through your saw once, removing only a small piece. The next cut that you make will be much cleaner. To keep a clean line in your cut, use a router. Make sure that your router is fitted with a straight bit as this will help you to achieve a clean line. A pilot bit and a straight edge will also help produce a clean line. You may also want to consider purchasing a panel scoring setup. Some saws can be fitted with a plywood panel scoring setup that is most useful if you cut a lot of plywood. This setup consists of a smaller blade that first scores the surface of the plywood before the wood reaches the cutter.

Once you have your wood cut, it is necessary to sand down the rough edges. You may not realize it, but sandpaper is one of your important woodworking tools. Here are some helpful wood sanding hints. For easy handling, some woodworkers cut their sandpaper into smaller pieces if they have a sanding block or a finishing sander while others fold the sandpaper to rotating sides as it wears down. However, make sure that your sandpaper is not folded so that two abrasive sides touch as this will wear down the paper against itself during use. To prevent this, fold the paper so that the abrasive sides contact only the non-abrasive sides. This simply requires a single cut along half of the sheet.

Once all your wood is cut and well sanded, you are ready to build. Handling wood is not always easy though, but there are tricks that can help you to do the job right. Anyone who has ever tried to nail into the end of board knows that splitting can happen because as the nail is driven into the wood, the wood fibers are forced apart causing the grain to split. Experienced carpenters will flatten the tip of the nail with a hammer before driving it into the wood because a flattened tip will slice through the wood and crush the fibers rather than split them. This woodworking trick is most useful when installing molding and trim.

Electric drills are essential for most woodworking enterprises. You do not want to be stuck wearing out your wrist by screwing in bolts and screws with a screwdriver for hours.

Chisels come in a variety of sizes, from one to two inches, and you will use all of them eventually. It is worth it to buy top of the line chisels, as they will get a lot of use and their durability will have a chance to be proven over the years. Woodworking Tools For Starters

If you're just getting started with woodworking it won't be long before you discover that even for fairly simple projects you're going to need a certain amount of basic tools in which to work with.

As your skills begin to advance and you find yourself more and more enjoying the time and the challenge of creating beautiful works of wood, you'll discover that as the complexity of your skills grow so will the need of the complexity of the tools that you need to work with.

These days just like everthing else, the search for and the information on woodworking tools isn't difficult in the least. And that's a good thing because as you grow into more complex (and expensive tools) you'll want to be able to be as informed as you possibly can before making such big investments in your tools. Be even with the all the information that the information highway provides, the best advice is to seek out experienced woodworkers and talk to them about the tools that they use... and even just as importantly the tools that they don't.

Also, as your woodworking hobby becomes more and more of a passion, you'll want to subscribe to a few favorite woodworking publications and start developing your library and resource materials that you can keep within arm's length in your shop. You can tailor your subscription to your skill level and as you advance you can begin adding more advanced reading and reference woodworking material to your arsenal.

As you begin to take on more and more projects you'll begin to have a much firmer grasp on what type of tools you'll need for each project and you'll be able to plan further ahead regarding the types of tools that you'll need. By this time, if you haven't already, you'll come to understand that it is always better to get high quality tools when it comes to your shop and your woodworking projects. Sure, maybe early on you went with the lower end less expensive tools and that's fine, but once you get to the point where you know your always going to love woodworking, don't skimp on the quality of your tools.

It won't be long that you'll soon look back and realize that the hammer, saw, and drill that you once started with were just the harbinger for things come.

But don't think that you need to immediately have to go out and fully equip your shop with woodworking tools. Let the project that you build and the woodworking paths and interests that you take drive the types and choices of tools that you buy and soon you will a great set of tools that work well with what you enjoying doing.
