Most beginners aren't sure which way to turn when trying to find the best wood working tools for their needs. They often wonder which are the best out on the market. The professionals however can spit out the names in a moment's notice of all of the best tools out there, or at least what they prefer. The fact of the matter is that there's a lot of quality woodworking tools and brand names out there and soon you'll have your favorites to recommend as well.

Some widely loved brands of tools include the Sears Craftsman collection, Rockwell Tools, Rigid, and Hitachi. You probably best know the Sears brand and have not only a number of your own, but a number of those handed down from your father or grandfather as well. The Craftsman Brand has to be well known as quality tools because of just that, they are quality, as well as the fact they're widely available. They're endorsed heavily by professionals as well as celebrities, and are great for the homeowner and his weekend projects.

You're more likely to find the other brands such as Rockwell and Hitachi in the more professional workshops. These are bought from all of the retailers that cater to this group of professional contractors, or the serious guys who do all of their own projects at home. This is not to say that you can't find these top brands in the major home improvement centers around, but often you must be a contractor to be admitted into the secure area of these stores.

Now if you're looking to save a buck or two, discount woodworking tools can be bought at specialty shops like Rockler. These stores can be found throughout the US, and offer classes as well, so that you can learn woodworking right there in their stores. To be technical, the "hardware" store is more the atmosphere of the serious woodworker than the gigantic home improvement centers are.

A workshop equipped for the most basics of woodworking will have some of the basic and standard tools of the trade. For instance you likely find a table saw, various sanders, wood glue as well as hammers and finishing nails. A number of hand or power tools are also needed such as a drills, a driver with several bits and don't forget the chisels for fine detailing. A more elaborate woodworking shop will likely include a miter saw, a scroll saw, plus a router for constructing the finer details.

The more modern woodworking shops also have a plethora of cordless tools. The newer lines of cordless tools are equipped with longer lasting batteries that make them much more efficient, as well as giving them much more power for even the heaviest of jobs that need more torque.

Be sure that your workshop has all of the tools that you'll need for the next project that you decide to tackle. Be sure to use plans that are available online and in books so that you'll be readily equipped with all of your tools beforehand.

In finish carpentry the trim wood around doors is called casing. When casing a door you want to try and get the miters as tight as possible.  A miter joint is the point where two pieces of casing meet at a corner. At a 90 degree corner where two pieces of casing meet each piece will be cut at 45 degrees to make this 90 degree corner. In theory this should work perfectly every time but little variables and imperfections throw this theory out of whack. Here are some tips and tricks to use to combat these little variables for almost perfect miters every time.

In order to have two pieces of casing cut at 45 degrees to make a 90 degree corner the casing has to be perfectly flat. A lot of times this isn't possible because the jamb of a door either sticks out past the inside sheet rocked wall or doesn't come out flush to the inside sheet rocked wall. This causes the casing to be tipped either inward or outward and when the casing is tipped in or out this will change the degree at the corner because of the distance of the miter to close the gaps. For example; if the casing is tipped inward or outward the miter will be open slightly to the inside or outside of the joint depending on how much it is tipped. Chances are you will run into this problem while doing finish carpentry but there is a solution.

In finish carpentry when casing a door or window always start with the top piece of casing. If the casing will be fairly flat when applied in place go ahead and cut each end at 45 degrees with a slight bevel back at the cut so the face of the casing is just slightly longer then the back of the casing. To get this slight bevel at the 45 degree cut slide a small piece of card board under the casing and close to the blade before cutting to slightly lift the end of the casing up the thickness of the card board. This piece of card board should be about an inch or so wide and the length of the width of the casing.

Another technique to get this bevel is to cut the casing upside down at the saw. If you have traditional type casing the casing will be thicker on the outside edge and go thinner to the inside edge. By cutting the casing upside down you automatically will create a natural back cut or bevel to the 45 degree angle cut.

Now you have the top piece of casing tacked in place with the ends cut at 45 degrees, it's just a bit of trial and error now. Cut a piece of scrap casing at the 45 degree angle and hold it in place. This will show you where the gaps are at the joint and you can adjust the miter saw to the correct degree to close the gap. When you have the correct degree adjusted to the miter saw you are ready to cut the next piece of casing that will be installed and have a nice tight miter. Be sure to apply the bevel technique to each cut.

Always apply glue to your miters before making the joint. Then each miter will be pinned together with a small nail at the outer corner so the nail goes through the miter to hold the two pieces together tightly. I use an 18 gauge nailer for nailing the inside of the casing to the door jamb as well as at the outside miter joint. After everything is pinned with the small gun I will use a 16 gauge gun to solidly nail the outer edge of the casing to the wall. When using the bigger gun to finish the nailing process stay away from the miter joint so you don't disturb the miter.

Finish carpentry has many little tips and tricks and these little tricks can have a big impact to the over all quality and the time it takes to finish a project.

Carpentry hand tools are a necessity if you are thinking about getting into woodworking. Whether cabinetry, furniture making, or just hobby projects, there are a few basic carpentry hand tools you will need. Stanley hand tools are favored because they offer such a wide variety of woodworking tools, for many different jobs. A circular saw is a common carpentry hand tool that demands respect for safety:

General Tips on Circular Saw Safety and Use:

- Always wear safety glasses or a face shield.
- Wear a respirator or dust mask.
- Wear hearing protection to avoid excess noise.
- Check the retracting lower blade guard.
- Ensure that the blade is sharp.
- Check the saw for proper blade rotation and depth while the saw is unplugged, (the lowest tooth should not extend more than about 0.3 cm or 1/8" beneath the wood).
- Keep all cords clear of cutting area.
- Circular saws are designed for right-hand operation, be careful when using left-handed, and always use both hands when operating the saw. One hand should be on the trigger switch and the other on the front knob.
- Always be sure the power is unplugged when not in use, especially if changing blades. Stanley hand tools also include other power tools such as drills, electric screwdrivers, grinders, sanders, jigsaws, miter saws, and other carpentry hand tools for special projects. These safety tips apply to any carpentry hand tools, whether Stanley hand tools, or any of the other popular brands:

Power Tool Safety Tips:

- Perform maintenance regularly as needed.
- Use the right tool for the job and inspect before using them.
- Operate according to manufacturers' instructions
- Use personal protective equipment like steel mesh gloves for cutting and safety glasses, or respirator masks.
- Use guards that come with the power tool and use them as intended.
- Disconnect power tools when not in use. Never mess with a power tool that is plugged in to change blades, or anything else.
- Don't hold the switch button while plugged-in, to carry.
- Keep tools sharp and clean, a sharp blade cuts better and is safer.
- Remove damaged cords and discard them.
- Do not carry, hoist or lower power tools by their cords.
- Don't pull the cord to disconnect it from an outlet, simply unplug it.
- Keep cords away from heat, oil and sharp edges, and especially make sure it is not in the path of what you are cutting.

Woodworking As a Hobby Can Seem to Be Overwhelming:

When you first start woodworking, it can seem overwhelming to assemble all that you are going to need. When it comes to carpentry hand tools, it is better to save for a good quality power tool, like Stanley hand tools, than to buy a cheap, off-name brand. Your carpentry hand tools are an investment that will last you for many years, and Stanley hand tools come with a warranty.

Buying Great Hand tools:

Buying great hand tools is easy, if you choose a reputable manufacturer, and Stanley discount tools are a leading brand for carpentry hand tools. The main thing is to accumulate your carpentry hand tools as you need them for individual projects.

Compound Miter

Task Force Compound Miter Saw with Laser?

I bought a floor model and need to change the blade; I also can't find the laser.I couldn't locate a Task Force company website to get a user manual. Any serious advice will be appreciated:)

For one thing, even as a low end tool MFG. Task Force brand is sold at HD.

The blade change can be as easy as the proper wrench, and a chunk of 2x4 for the blade to bite while you loosen, then change and retighten.

No offense to you, but I find laser tool accesories to be rather useless, often, and the nature of the tool, doesn't need laser sighting anyway. You can certainly check angles with a framing square and make sure the table is well secured, or that the degree guide that relocates the saw itself is able to be secured in a stable fashion.

Even if you found the laser, and it functioned, you might have to re-calibrate it often.

More Security With A Miter Saw Stand

In the past, a miter saw held a blade that was attached to a box and perfectly angled to create a ninety and forty-five degree angle with just a simple adjustment. This manual tool could easily cut through crown, frame or chair moldings as well as cuts to exterior corners on baseboard moldings. This could be why so many people still use this manual saw and find it to be perfectly suitable for their work.

Today, it seems to all come down to power, even with basic tools. The greatest advantage of a power saw is the clean cut it provides. Regardless of the skill of the craftsman, a hand saw leaves the cut wood somewhat more ragged than a power saw. With power tools becoming more popular, there is not much of a difference in price between a manual miter saw and a basic power miter saw.

For fancier versions of the miter saw, though, you will need power. Generally, with a miter saw or radial saw users can adjust the degree of the cut relative to the fence guiding the wood. There are standard stops with the most common settings being fifteen, thirty, forty-five and ninety degrees. When the wood is securely anchored against the fence, possibly using a miter saw stand, a forty-five degree cut will match perfectly to a corresponding forty-five degree cut in the opposite direction. This allows for a perfect mitered corner for frames or window moldings.

Beyond frames and crown molding, the new compound miter saw makes table tops, counters and other furniture safer and even more appealing. A compound cut gives counters and table tops a unique beveled edge that rounds the sharp corners. This makes them a little safer and less likely to scratch or snag a passerby. The gradual angles of the cut shape the edge while some sanding will smoother edges to perfection.

Radial arm saws can create a similar effect as the compound cut. It simply requires a couple passes of the blade at different angles. The DeWalt radial arm saw is a good choice in models, but stopped production in the United States in 1985. However, this tool can still be found in many workshops today throughout the country.

A panel saw is used during the first step in projects such as cabinetry. The panel saw is designed to cut the face and sides of the cabinet by cutting large panels of plywood into rectangles. The miter saw would then be used to frame and face the front of the cabinet door or draw to give the beveled edges and decorative front.

As you can see, a number of saws are part of a complete workshop. If you must substitute a miter saw for another saw, the radial saw would be a good choice.

A Miter Saw Stand Is Important In The Workshop

A miter saw is an essential tool if you are planning on cutting a miter edge on trim or baseboards. A basic miter saw will cut only or horizontal angles, but a compound miter saw will cut beveled edges. If you do a lot of this kind of work, you may want to invest in special features such as a slide that will allow the blade to move forward in order to cut a large piece.

A compound miter can cut straight or on a horizontal angle, but because of the tilting motor, it can also cut a bevel. A plain miter will not be able to do this. You use a miter saw by sitting it on a table and the spinning saw is pushed into the wood to make the cut. Miter saws are lightweight, durable and portable. They are easily carried from one job site to another.

There is an even more complex miter saw which is called a double bevel saw or a dual compound saw. They are even more versatile than the compound miter since they can tilt in either direction to make beveled edges.

A sliding compound miter saw works like a compound miter, but can also be pulled forward as the wood is cut, so that long pieces of wood can be mitered.

Put all of these features together, and you get the dual compound sliding saw. These saws can cut miters or bevels, since they tilt in either direction and they also have the slide feature so that large pieces of wood can be cut. Even though they have all of these features, they are portable and can go from job to job just like the others.

The most versatile saw of all if the radial arm saw. Most people consider them the most desired piece of equipment in a workshop. This saw allows you to do many different kinds of cuts such as dado work, ripping stock and crosscutting. But they alto tilt for cutting a miter edge or a beveled edge and they can be used for routing and drilling.

In deciding the blade size for a saw, you have to go by the maximum size of the wood you are working with. Make sure the saw has sufficient cross cutting ability for the size of the piece of wood. The best radial arm saw is the De Walt. It is easy to use, while still being reliable and durable. A De Walt radial saw will meet most woodworkers needs since it is adjustable to be able to work on many kinds of projects or sizes of wood.

A panel saw is used to cut large sheets of lumber, and so is usually found in lumber yards. Plywood, paneling or particleboard is usually cut by a panel saw into either 4X8 foot sheets or 4X12 foot sheets. A stationary model would be used in a lumber yard. Panel saws are also used by contractors for new homes or large home improvement projects, but they prefer a portable model that can be moved to different sites.
