Can using a palm sander for too long damage anything in your hands?

I am not an expert, but I do work in healthcare, just so you know. With that said, any long term exposure to vibration can cause a number of problems. The type of problems and the extent of them is directly related to the type and length of exposure. Here are some things that are related to this type of vibration exposure:

hand-arm vibration-induced tingling and/or numbness in the fingers, also finger
vibration blanching, increased stiffness of the finger joints, loss of manipulation skills
syndrome and loss of blood circulation which can lead to gangrene and tissue necrosis.

Wooden tools created by our primitive ancestors were located in Lehringen. Some spears were found in Germany. Wooden weapons for hunting and flint tools for carving show that primitive people were already knowledgeable on how to create materials that would help them obtain their needs.

There are two ancient civilizations that are often mentioned when woodworking is the subject matter. These are the Egyptians and the Chinese. This is because woodworking has been shown in their ancient sketches and drawings.

Also, a vast amount of Egyptian furniture like chairs, tables, beds, stools and chests have been encased in tombs. Preservation of such materials shows that the ancient Egyptian people were inclined to use wood. Coffins that were located in the tomb were also out of wood.

Egyptians used metal for their woodwork. Copper and bronze were the main tools for woodworking. These were turned into adzes, pull saws, axes, chisels and bow drills.

Ancient Egyptians were the first civilization to do veneering. They were also the first to use varnish, therefore resulting to what is now termed as “finishes.” They used native acacias and the wood from the sycamore and tamarisk trees.

As for the Chinese, wood working was said to have started when Lu Ban and his wife Lady Yun brought plane and chalkline to China. This was during the Spring and Autumn period. From them on, Lu Ban’s teachings were said to have been recoreded in the book “Lu Band Jing” or “Manuscript of Lu Ban.”

This was written 1500 years after he died. The book is complete with elaborate descriptions of the necessary dimensions in building different kinds of furniture like tables, altars and flower pots.

In the modern times, these are the tools a woodworker must possess:

Kinds of workbench
1. dog hole or a round or square hole that allows clamping and holding devices to be attached
2. bench dog or a peg that is inserted into a dog hole that lets in the clamp pressure
3. hold fast or the rod that is bent when put into the dog hole. It is used to put boards into position
4. vise or a clamping apparatus that holds wood in various positions during woodworking
5. bench hook that is laid against the wood that can be pushed during woodworking.
- Sawhorse is the four legged stand that often comes in pairs. It supports long boards, sheets and panels.

Carpenters, what cordless set do you recommend?

I have just started woodworking and would like to start a cordless collection. I'll start with the basics: drill, circular, palm sander, router. Can you all recommend a good brand. I know Dewalt is top of the line but it is out of my price range. My father has a small set of Ryobi 18v and seems happy with it. Is this a good set? Please also recommend some other necessary tools. I have several hand tools: screwdrivers, plyers, clamps.
I'll probably start building simple projects: bookshelves, a ladder for a bunk bed, a child's drafting table.

There is no blanket brand that is best for every single tool. And to go cordless with every tool is not wise. No, Dewalt is not top of the line, they just have a rep. This is my list on many years experience.

Drills - Panasonic, yes Panasonic, makes the finest drills around. Pick up one of the cordless combo packs with a drill and impact driver and you will be astounded at the performance and accuracy of the tools. They are the only drill maker that delivers torque at even levels no matter what speed the chuck is spinning. In other words, other brands derive higher torque by spinning faster which makes for sloppy work if you dig in too deep or start off at top speed. These are the best cordless drills and priced near Milwaukees. I gave my Dewalt cordless to my Dad after discovering Panasonics. Don't buy a hammer drill unless you are doing extensive work with concrete drilling. If they are out of your price range, go Craftsman as their replacement batteries are dirt cheap. Keep a decent corded drill around just in case.

Circ Saw - Many fine brands out there, but Bosch fits my hand very well. Pick up the saw and see how it fits in your hand. Circ. saws must be comfortable or you will make sloppy cuts. If you need high power and are cutting very thick pieces of wood a worm drive Skil Saw is the way to go. Comfort and weight is key and Bosch works best for me in this dept. Cordless circ saws are a waste of money in my opinion. The battery life is horrific on any brand I have used. If these are too much money for you (Bosch circ saw is around $110), then I really don't know what to say. Just buy anything that is comfortable and in your price range.

Sanders - Porter Cable makes great sanders. Again, stay clear of cordless in this department as the batteries just can't keep up. If you are working on a tight budget, skip the sander all together and spend more on better saws and drills. Elbow grease replaces any sander at 1/100th the price.

Router - Porter Cable again in this dept. Honestly, I won't go near any other brand router. The true cost of a router begins AFTER you buy one. Bit sets are very expensive and you may be better off buying trim that matches the type of edges you want. Cut them to size and glue on the corners.

Those are the tools you listed. Cordless tools have advantages when used properly. Anything that runs for long periods of time (sander, jig saw, etc) will be a huge disappointment to you. If you absolutely must have one of those cordless combo sets and Dewalt is too expensive, go with Craftsman or Ryobi.

If all you have is some hand tools and you want to make furniture properly, be ready to shell out at least $1000 on power tools. It sounds like the things you want to work on are indoor projects. For the projects you listed, skip the circ saw and buy a miter saw.

Making things for around the house is very rewarding so keep at it. For shelves, go buy a $100 miter saw (Lowes has a Hitachi for $100 I believe as does Ryobi and Craftsman), wood glue, a Craftsman cordless drill (get corded if you do not already have one, cheap cordless drills can't match the power of a corded drill), a carpenters square, a level, and some screws. Sand the pieces first, assemble, and finish with some stain. Build up your skills with the basics first and things will make more sense when you go shopping for power tools. Have fun!

Anything You Can Think of Cordless Black

What do you think of when you think of cordless Black & Decker? You may think of small cordless screwdrivers or wimpy tools you only find at discount stores. While I don't think of cordless Black & Decker tools as industrial grade tools, they really have a wide variety of tools that you will find handy around the house, cabin or lake home.

The cordless Black & Decker lineup contains everything from you basic cordless screwdriver, to cordless drills, cordless scissors, tools for yard work including cordless mowers, hedge trimmers, weed trimmers and more. I have one of the cordless Black & Decker weed trimmers and while it doesn't have the power of my gas weed trimmer, it has more than enough to trim up around the house and it always starts. The gas trimmers that I have had typically work for a couple of seasons and then I have to rebuild the carb to keep it running.

One of the really neat tools I noticed in the cordless Black & Decker line is a chainsaw called the Alligator. This tool is a small cordless chainsaw with a clamp below the blade that bites down on the wood you are cutting. It really does look like an alligator! They also have a regular cordless chainsaw and a chainsaw that you can extend up on a pole to cut off limbs a little higher up. Again, these cordless Black & Decker tools don't look like something you would use every day but still, I they have some tools I have never even seen.

Maybe you are looking for a cordless screwdriver for you hobby shop or your camper. Again the cordless Black & Decker line up has several for you to chose from. You can get a very inexpensive tool that will be handy here and there or if you want something with a little more power, try their lithium screw drivers. Lithium tools offer more run time and power in a lighter weight tool that can charge very fast. Some of these tools have LED lights on them making them handy when working in dark corners, maybe like removing hinges inside a cabinet.

They also handle a variety of drills. While I still prefer having my heavy duty Bosch drill at my side, a smaller less powerful drill will work just fine around the house. While most of the cordless Black & Decker drills are fairly reasonably priced, you can afford to have one in your camper, your cabin or lake home. Many of times these tools are more than ample for simple odd jobs around the home like hanging pictures or drilling a small hole to run a cord or something else simple like this. If you do want a little more power, the cordless Black & Decker line includes 24 volt tools available in a combo kit.

One other tool that I guess you can call a cordless Black & Decker tool is their self adjusting wrench. This crescent wrench adjusts to the bolt head with just a touch. I have read a couple of reviews and while some have been able to break them, many felt they were very handy around the house.

So there you have it, a few thoughts on the cordless Black & Decker tool line up. This really doesn't do their line up justice. You just won't believe the cordless Black & Decker tools available.

Woodworking is popular all over the world as both a profession and a pastime. There are a wide range of woodworking tools, however, when you're first starting out you should only need a handful of them and you certainly don't need to go out and spend loads of money.

The best advice anyone can give you is to start out buying only those tools you feel comfortable using and to add tools later on as you need them. Also, while it may be tempting to go for the cheaper tools, it's the sturdier the tool is, the longer it will last. So if you want to save money, check for tool sales or you can even buy them second hand. If it's a good tool, it will often last for many years.

When it comes to woodworking tools, the basics include drill bits, hammers, hacksaws, levels, pliers, safety glasses, sandpaper, screwdrivers, tape measures and wrenches. Make sure you are familiar with how to use the tool, as well as what it's used for, before you even pick it up. Being overly confident about a tool before you learn about it is a good way to get injured.

If you are a beginner woodworker, you should always start with soft woods such as pine or spruce, as they are much easier to work with than harder woods. Once you become more comfortable, you can then move on to more exotic woods like cherry or Baltic birch.

Once you become more experienced, you can move on to power tools. Circular saws, power drills, jigsaws, random orbital sanders, table saws and compound miter saws are excellent tools to work with if you wish to create more complex woodworking projects.

No matter what woodworking tools you're using, however, you should always put safety first. You should always wear the proper safety equipment. Safety goggles, ear protection if you're using power tools, and gloves are necessary so as to prevent injury.

You'll also want to pay attention to the clothing you wear. Loose fitting clothing should be avoided and instead you should choose thicker materials such as denim. This will protect you from heat as well as flying wood chips. You should also refrain from wearing any jewelery that can get snagged by any of the tools you're using.
Woodworking can be a lot of fun as long as you educate yourself on the proper procedures and you put safety first.

Craftsman has maintained a good reputation among experienced professionals and those new to woodworking. The company stands behind their tools, which come with a lifetime warranty. If a tool is defective, simply return it to a Sears store for replacement. Table saws and miter saws are two of the quality tools made by Craftsman. The table saws come in ten and twelve inch models and most have three horsepower motors. Is Your Woodworking Hendered By A Lack Of Tools?

In finish carpentry the trim wood around doors is called casing. When casing a door you want to try and get the miters as tight as possible.  A miter joint is the point where two pieces of casing meet at a corner. At a 90 degree corner where two pieces of casing meet each piece will be cut at 45 degrees to make this 90 degree corner. In theory this should work perfectly every time but little variables and imperfections throw this theory out of whack. Here are some tips and tricks to use to combat these little variables for almost perfect miters every time.

In order to have two pieces of casing cut at 45 degrees to make a 90 degree corner the casing has to be perfectly flat. A lot of times this isn't possible because the jamb of a door either sticks out past the inside sheet rocked wall or doesn't come out flush to the inside sheet rocked wall. This causes the casing to be tipped either inward or outward and when the casing is tipped in or out this will change the degree at the corner because of the distance of the miter to close the gaps. For example; if the casing is tipped inward or outward the miter will be open slightly to the inside or outside of the joint depending on how much it is tipped. Chances are you will run into this problem while doing finish carpentry but there is a solution.

In finish carpentry when casing a door or window always start with the top piece of casing. If the casing will be fairly flat when applied in place go ahead and cut each end at 45 degrees with a slight bevel back at the cut so the face of the casing is just slightly longer then the back of the casing. To get this slight bevel at the 45 degree cut slide a small piece of card board under the casing and close to the blade before cutting to slightly lift the end of the casing up the thickness of the card board. This piece of card board should be about an inch or so wide and the length of the width of the casing.

Another technique to get this bevel is to cut the casing upside down at the saw. If you have traditional type casing the casing will be thicker on the outside edge and go thinner to the inside edge. By cutting the casing upside down you automatically will create a natural back cut or bevel to the 45 degree angle cut.

Now you have the top piece of casing tacked in place with the ends cut at 45 degrees, it's just a bit of trial and error now. Cut a piece of scrap casing at the 45 degree angle and hold it in place. This will show you where the gaps are at the joint and you can adjust the miter saw to the correct degree to close the gap. When you have the correct degree adjusted to the miter saw you are ready to cut the next piece of casing that will be installed and have a nice tight miter. Be sure to apply the bevel technique to each cut.

Always apply glue to your miters before making the joint. Then each miter will be pinned together with a small nail at the outer corner so the nail goes through the miter to hold the two pieces together tightly. I use an 18 gauge nailer for nailing the inside of the casing to the door jamb as well as at the outside miter joint. After everything is pinned with the small gun I will use a 16 gauge gun to solidly nail the outer edge of the casing to the wall. When using the bigger gun to finish the nailing process stay away from the miter joint so you don't disturb the miter.

Finish carpentry has many little tips and tricks and these little tricks can have a big impact to the over all quality and the time it takes to finish a project.

Task Force Compound Miter Saw with Laser?

I bought a floor model and need to change the blade; I also can't find the laser.I couldn't locate a Task Force company website to get a user manual. Any serious advice will be appreciated:)

For one thing, even as a low end tool MFG. Task Force brand is sold at HD.

The blade change can be as easy as the proper wrench, and a chunk of 2x4 for the blade to bite while you loosen, then change and retighten.

No offense to you, but I find laser tool accesories to be rather useless, often, and the nature of the tool, doesn't need laser sighting anyway. You can certainly check angles with a framing square and make sure the table is well secured, or that the degree guide that relocates the saw itself is able to be secured in a stable fashion.

Even if you found the laser, and it functioned, you might have to re-calibrate it often.

More Security With A Miter Saw Stand

In the past, a miter saw held a blade that was attached to a box and perfectly angled to create a ninety and forty-five degree angle with just a simple adjustment. This manual tool could easily cut through crown, frame or chair moldings as well as cuts to exterior corners on baseboard moldings. This could be why so many people still use this manual saw and find it to be perfectly suitable for their work.

Today, it seems to all come down to power, even with basic tools. The greatest advantage of a power saw is the clean cut it provides. Regardless of the skill of the craftsman, a hand saw leaves the cut wood somewhat more ragged than a power saw. With power tools becoming more popular, there is not much of a difference in price between a manual miter saw and a basic power miter saw.

For fancier versions of the miter saw, though, you will need power. Generally, with a miter saw or radial saw users can adjust the degree of the cut relative to the fence guiding the wood. There are standard stops with the most common settings being fifteen, thirty, forty-five and ninety degrees. When the wood is securely anchored against the fence, possibly using a miter saw stand, a forty-five degree cut will match perfectly to a corresponding forty-five degree cut in the opposite direction. This allows for a perfect mitered corner for frames or window moldings.

Beyond frames and crown molding, the new compound miter saw makes table tops, counters and other furniture safer and even more appealing. A compound cut gives counters and table tops a unique beveled edge that rounds the sharp corners. This makes them a little safer and less likely to scratch or snag a passerby. The gradual angles of the cut shape the edge while some sanding will smoother edges to perfection.

Radial arm saws can create a similar effect as the compound cut. It simply requires a couple passes of the blade at different angles. The DeWalt radial arm saw is a good choice in models, but stopped production in the United States in 1985. However, this tool can still be found in many workshops today throughout the country.

A panel saw is used during the first step in projects such as cabinetry. The panel saw is designed to cut the face and sides of the cabinet by cutting large panels of plywood into rectangles. The miter saw would then be used to frame and face the front of the cabinet door or draw to give the beveled edges and decorative front.

As you can see, a number of saws are part of a complete workshop. If you must substitute a miter saw for another saw, the radial saw would be a good choice.
