Modern Power Tools - the Lithium Ion Cordless Drill

Power tools are essential for those jobs, which require more intense workmanship that ordinary tools cannot handle. A power tool is basically a tool, which is powered by an electric motor or alternatively a compressed air motor or petrol driven motor. They are typically used in the construction industry but are also used around the house to complete those otherwise hard to do jobs. Power tools are used for cutting, drilling, shaping, grinding, painting, sanding and polishing. Machine tools are a form of power tools used in metal work. It is not uncommon for the same power tool to be used both in wood and metal work.

The first used power tool was the lathe. Power tools were initially developed during the time of the industrial revolution. When factories began to use power tools to drive belts from overhead shafts. The main power source was a water wheel or later a steam engine. These tools were stationary until the introduction of the electric motor in the 1880s, which made the self powered stationary and portable tools we know today possible. The electric motor has remained the preferred source by which stationary power tools are driven. These tools use a cord but what has become increasingly popular for portable power tools is the battery. However batteries still have limitations because of they run out and lack sustaining power. Cost of buying and maintaining the use of batteries keep the cordless versions in lower demand on the market. Nailers and paint sprayers more frequently use air pressure, while chain saws, weed eaters and lawn motors have a preference for petrol driven motors.

One of the most popular power tools is the cordless drill, which is a type of electric drill but instead of being connected to a wall socket uses rechargeable batteries. Typically cordless drills come in the hammer drill configuration and mostly have a clutch setting, which allows them to be used for driving screws. In order to continue working without much interruption the tradesman will have a number of spare battery packs charging while drilling, so that he or she can quickly swap them.

The earliest cordless drills used 7.2V battery packs but over the years the battery voltage has increased to 18V and more, thus allowing these tools to produce as much torque as those drills connected to a main power supply. The main disadvantage of most current cordless drills is the use of nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries, which develop a "memory effect" or internal short circuits due to dendrite growth. This severely limits their usefulness and life span and in turn creates a hazardous materials disposal problem. Drill manufacturers are now producing lithium ion batteries. Makita Electric Works and Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation are two such manufacturers producing lithium ion batteries. The main advantages are lack of memory effect and very short charging time. Lithium ion batteries can provide an hour of work per twenty minutes of charging instead of vice versa. These batteries also have a constant discharge rate meaning that the power output remains constant until the battery is depleted, something that nickel-cadmium batteries lacks. This constant discharge rate makes cordless drills much more versatile. Lithium-ion batteries also hold a charge for a significantly longer time than nickel-cadmium batteries, about 2 years if not used, vs. around 4 months for a nickel-cadmium battery.

Cordless drills will increase in their popularity as science overcomes its' limitations and as power tools become increasingly powerful.

Why can't I buy a makita drill from america instead of the expensive uk?

Thats what I want, but I cannot buy (sob sob sob)
I think it is because they are a lot cheaper and the british enjoy getting ripped off
It is a cordless drill and it is 110v on a building site.

The electricity supply in the states is a different frequency. I'll have to look into this a whole lot more. I know Makita won't like it.

I think it is the batteries that cost alot.

Hahahaha! Iv got that exact drill! And I bought it from lowes in Johnson City in America! And I cant find a 230v charger here! -So I have to plug it into a 110v transformer onsite.

You can buy 1 there and you can use it over here just chop the 2pin american plug off the end and put a 16amp 110v plug onto it the hertz over there are different (60hz) compared to our (50hz) but that doesnt make any difference

What is the best and worst ways to care for lithium ion batteries?

Hi - just got a new Lithium Ion 18v drill. I remember that the only complaints against it were people killing the batteries by accident. But I've read the instructions cover to cover, and there isn't any real pointers on how to care for the batteries. Do you have any tips or opinions? I'd like to know what to do and what to avoid. Thanks.

Keep them well charged, but without substantial heating.
NEVER run them flat. The problem there is, being a battery comprised of series cells, some may exhaust before others. If you continue trying to use them, the flat cell(s) will have a reverse voltage applied to them. They don't like it.
Li-ion cells don't suffer from the "memory" problems that Ni-cad cells did, so to recharging them after only short useage doesn't worry them.
The charger supplied by the drill manufacturer will have instructions, follow them. The supplied charger may self- adjust to suit the battery, anyway.
Oh, and remember that charging it now won't mean it will be ready to go in 2 months' time. These cells don't hold charge for long periods.

Millions of Lithium-ion Laptop Batteries Was Discovered That They Could Overheat and Ignite

Millions of lithium-ion laptop batteries made by Sony for Apple, Dell Inc., Lenovo Inc. and other PC makers were recalled in 2006 and 2007 after it was discovered that they could overheat and ignite.

Apple did not immediately return a call seeking the name of the company that made the iPod batteries in question. Yoshitsune declined to name the supplier.

The company's written statement came in response to a Japanese government report that two iPod Nanos overheated in Tokyo, scorching nearby paper and a woven straw mat.

Apple said the flaw affected first-generation Nanos, sold between September 2005 and December 2006, in very rare instances. The company's statement added that "There have been no reports of serious injuries or property damage, and no reports of incidents for any other iPod Nano model."

Japan's government has been working with Apple to investigate three separate cases of iPods that overheated while being recharged, according to Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry official Hiroyuki Yoshitsune. A defect in the lithium-ion battery was suspected in all three cases.

No one was injured during the two Tokyo incidents disclosed Tuesday. Yoshitsune said the cases involved an iPod Nano, model number MA099, which singed nearby paper in August, and model MA005, which burned a traditional Japanese tatami mat in January. Both music players were twisted out of shape from the heat and became unusable, he said.

The latest problem follows a similar report from the Japanese ministry in March about sparks shooting out of an iPod Nano.

Apple's iPod players are extremely popular in Japan and coveted as fashion items, even though Japanese manufacturers produce a host of iPod rivals.

General Motors Plans Volt Battery Factory in Michigan

By the end of 2010, General Motors expects to have its first production ready electric car, the Chevrolet Volt, in showrooms across the USA. Highly anticipated, the Volt represents a new direction the giant automaker is going by producing a line of highly energy efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles for the masses.

Before GM can produce one Volt, the company has to have a factory in place that can produce the four hundred pound lithium-ion battery pack that will power the car. To that end, GM has announced that a factory in Michigan will assemble the fuel cells that will be made by South Korea's LG Chem Corporation, investing $30 million to get the job done.

"The design, development and production of advanced batteries must be a core competency for GM, and we've been rapidly building our capability and resources to support this direction," Wagoner said. "This is a further demonstration of our commitment to the electrification of the automobile and to the Chevrolet Volt - a commitment that now totals more than $1 billion."

A location for the plant hasn't been finalized, but the car company is in talks with state and local officials about the placement of the facility. GM expects that the facility will be put quickly in place, allowing the company to start output by early 2010.

"Our announcements are part of a comprehensive advanced battery strategy for GM that is expanding along two pathways," Wagoner said. "First, we're identifying core competencies - such as battery research, development and assembly - and integrating these fundamentals into our product development and manufacturing operations. We believe this will become a competitive advantage for GM, and will be critical to GM's long-term success. Secondly, we're building a roster of battery suppliers and academic experts from around the globe, and leveraging their specialized abilities to develop battery chemistries and cell designs, as well as future automotive battery engineers."

The Volt is expected to be the first of many electric cars built by GM over the coming years. Supplement power will be provided by a 1.4L I4 engine, but on electric power alone the Volt will have a forty mile range. GM expects that the car will appeal to commuters who will be able to plug in their cars each night for a recharge and go about their business the following day.

GM has recently displayed the Cadillac Converj concept, a stylish two door coupe, that is yet another example how the Volt platform could be utilized. GM expects that the Volt will also be sold in Europe under its Opel brand and perhaps in Australia as a Holden model.

Modern Power Tools – the Lithium Ion Cordless Drill

]]> Power tools are essential for those jobs, which require more intense workmanship that ordinary tools cannot handle. A power tool is basically a tool, which is powered by an electric motor or alternatively a compressed air motor or petrol driven motor. They are typically used in the construction industry but are also used around the house to complete those otherwise hard to do jobs. Power tools are used for cutting, drilling, shaping, grinding, painting, sanding and polishing. Machine tools are a form of power tools used in metal work. It is not uncommon for the same power tool to be used both in wood and metal work. Go to Industrial tools for more information.

The first used power tool was the lathe. Power tools were initially developed during the time of the industrial revolution. When factories began to use power tools to drive belts from overhead shafts. The main power source was a water wheel or later a steam engine. These tools were stationary until the introduction of the electric motor in the 1880s, which made the self powered stationary and portable tools we know today possible. The electric motor has remained the preferred source by which stationary power tools are driven. These tools use a cord but what has become increasingly popular for portable power tools is the battery. However batteries still have limitations because of they run out and lack sustaining power. Cost of buying and maintaining the use of batteries keep the cordless versions in lower demand on the market. Nailers and paint sprayers more frequently use air pressure, while chain saws, weed eaters and lawn motors have a preference for petrol driven motors.

One of the most popular power tools is the cordless drill, which is a type of electric drill but instead of being connected to a wall socket uses rechargeable batteries. Typically cordless drills come in the hammer drill configuration and mostly have a clutch setting, which allows them to be used for driving screws. In order to continue working without much interruption the tradesman will have a number of spare battery packs charging while drilling, so that he or she can quickly swap them. The earliest cordless drills used 7.2V battery packs but over the years the battery voltage has increased to 18V and more, thus allowing these tools to produce as much torque as those drills connected to a main power supply. The main disadvantage of most current cordless drills is the use of nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries, which develop a "memory effect" or internal short circuits due to dendrite growth. This severely limits their usefulness and life span and in turn creates a hazardous materials disposal problem. Drill manufacturers are now producing lithium ion batteries. Makita Electric Works and Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation are two such manufacturers producing lithium ion batteries. The main advantages are lack of memory effect and very short charging time. Lithium ion batteries can provide an hour of work per twenty minutes of charging instead of vice versa. These batteries also have a constant discharge rate meaning that the power output remains constant until the battery is depleted, something that nickel-cadmium batteries lacks. This constant discharge rate makes cordless drills much more versatile. Lithium-ion batteries also hold a charge for a significantly longer time than nickel-cadmium batteries, about 2 years if not used, vs. around 4 months for a nickel-cadmium battery.

Lithium Ion Batteries - Should You Use Them With Your Electrical Appliance?

Lithium ion batteries are one of the most popular battery types that are used in consumer electronics today. If you bought a PDA or a camcorder lately, in most cases you may have gotten Lithium ion batteries together with your purchased item. But what do we really know about these batteries? For instance, are they dangerous in any way? Let's take a closer look at theses batteries, their pro's and con's:

Lithium ion batteries – the pro's:
1.Lithium ion batteries have one of the best energy-to-weight ratios. That means they are very light and provide many hours of electricity supply to your product. They are reported to give at least %40 more than the older nickel cadmium batteries, while being a lot lighter.
2.The Lithium ion batteries also don't have any of that memory effect that is so annoying with other types of batteries. The memory effect in batteries means that if a battery is recharged when it's not completely empty, it's full capacity is reduced to the level in which it was recharged.
3.The Lithium ion batteries have a very slow rate of self discharge (while not in use), compared to other batteries. They may lose up to %5 every month, as compared to other batteries that may lost up to %30 every month while not in use.

Lithium ion batteries – the con's:
1.A unique drawback of the Li-ion battery is that its life span is dependent upon aging from time of manufacturing (shelf life) regardless of whether it was charged, and not just on the number of charge/discharge cycles. This drawback is not widely known, and for obvious reasons, the manufacturers are happy to keep it that way. The life span of an Li-ion battery will also we significantly influenced by the temperature it is stored in. Temperatures higher than 25 Celsius will shorten it's life span significantly. This makes the Li-ion battery useful in backup systems as they can't survive long enough.
2.Because the maximum power that can be continuously drawn from the battery depends on its capacity, in high-powered applications, like PDA's, Notebook Computers and video cameras, rather than showing a gradual shortening of the running time of the equipment, Li-Ion batteries may often just abruptly fail. Low-powered cyclical applications, like mobile phones, can get a much longer lifetime out of a Li-Ion battery. This is something to consider when you think about what battery to choose for your notebook computer, as the sudden lose of power is very frustrating.
3.Li-ion batteries are not as durable as nickel metal hydride or nickel-cadmium designs and can be extremely dangerous if mistreated. Fro that reason, they are quit frequently recalled.
4.The Li-ion batteries are usually more expensive than other batteries.

So now you can see that the Li-ion batteries come with some great advantages, but are not totally without disadvantages. Their extreme popularity show that their advantages are worth more than the disadvantages. Just remember to handle them with care and according to the instructions.

]]> Although you might think of wood working machinery being the enemy of trees and nature, they can be a little friendlier if you use them correctly. Getting the most from your wood working machinery certainly saves on waste, which means less trees need to be used for one project. And the fumes and gases given off in your wood working area can be cut down in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Unplug When Not Using

For safety's sake as well for the environment's sake, keep all wood working machinery unplugged when you are not using it. This not only saves you money, but can also save your fingers. When you unplug big wood working machinery, dont just leave the plug on the floor where someone can trip over it. Hang it up on a nail or coil it up.

And you dont need to keep everything charged all of the time. Some of the newest cordless wood working tools use lithium ion batteries that only loose between 2-5% of their energy per month. That means they don't need to be charged after every use.

What's That On The Floor?

Although Shop-Vacs are neat toys, they kick up material into the air and use up a lot of energy. You can avoid this by cleaning up your messes around your wood working machinery by spreading sawdust all over the floor. The sawdust soaks up chemical spills as well as any woodworking scraps. Just sweep it up (yes, the old fashioned way). You may want to wear a face mask when doing this.

Wipe Your Paws

After working with your wood working machinery and any wood stains, thinners or paint, you may have lots of pathogens and other nasty stuff on your work boots. Keep these things in its place by having foot wiping mats outside of your wood working machinery shop or shed. If you do your tinkering in the basement, then have a floor mat at the top of the steps.

Keep Used Paint Thinner

When you're working with wood, you inevitably work with pain thinner. Never pour used paint thinner into the toilet or out into the street. If you let your brushes or whatever sit in the pain thinner overnight, the thinner separates into clean thinner and dirty sludge. You can strain off the clean thinner and then all you have to worry about is the sludge. That need to go in a hazardous waste material site.
