Jig Saw Blades

How can I cut PVC pipe (that does NOT have the factory ends) level / square so it can stand up straight?

I have a large scrap PVC pipe (just over 9" outside diameter, 6' long, 3/4" thick walls) and it does NOT have the factory cuts on the end, so the ends aren't level. If I stand the pipe up on a concrete floor, it will fall down because the ends are crooked.

How can I make a straight level cut so it will stand up on both ends at near perfect levelness? Basically, I need to reproduce the square factory cuts @ home.

The only method I can think of is to wrap duct tape around it once and overlap it a bit. When the ends of duct tape match up evenly, I'll use a marker & the edge of the duct tape like a ruler and mark around the pipe. Remove the tape, then cut w/ a jig saw on the line I just created.

Any other ideas?

Other misc. questions:
a. What kind of jig saw blade should I use?
b. Any other recommendations besides duct tape to wrap around the pipe?

Thank you!

Buy/find a coupling that is made for that size pipe. Slip it on the uneven end, and mark or cut the pipe with the edge of the coupling as your guide. It will be perfectly square.

You can use a metal or wood blade for the cut, even a chain saw.

Or, you can leave the coupling on the uneven end. Since the coupling will create a square end it will stand upright on the coupling, it will be a little larger, therefore more stable, and you do not have to make a cut.

A Guide to Woodworking Jigs

If you have a woodworking workshop, it is likely that you will need a woodworking jig. Jigs are useful for repetitive tasks in many woodworking projects, and help in making complex tasks quicker and easier. Woodworking jigs are readily available from hardware stores, and are usually very cheap. It is even more cost effective to build your own from scrap wood, and can be beneficial because you can create a jig suited to your specific needs and taste. Depending on the type and amount of projects you like to do, you will need a variety of different jigs.

Different Types of Woodworking Jigs

Dovetail Jigs: Dovetail jigs are useful for building dovetail joints accurately. Dovetail jigs can be purchased at relatively inexpensive prices. You could even build your own dovetail jig using templates from the internet or stores that sell woodworking supplies. If sourced successfully, many of these templates will allow you to make up to twelve different jig sizes.

If you are going to make your own jigs, you may want to purchase a dovetail bit for your router and a dovetail saw. Good templates will assist you in making variably spaced or fixed dovetails for a variety of projects including drawers, cabinets and small boxes.

A dovetail saw is a good purchase, because it need not only be used for cutting dovetails, but can also cut other fine joints for other projects. Dovetail saws have thinner blades which allow for greater accuracy. It is important to purchase good quality tools for a more professional result on your projects. When buying a dovetail saw, look for about fourteen to seventeen points per inch.

Dowel Jigs: A dowel jig is used for making good quality dowels. If you are going to be using thick timber, it is best to use a self-centering jig for better accuracy. There are a variety of sizes available, from a quarter to one half inch. There are complete kits available from woodworking supply shops that include the dowel jig and several hundred dowels in a variety of sizes.

Kreg Jig: Kreg jigs are ideal for cabinet making. Naturally, you will want the movement of the drawers to be smooth, so perfectly positioned slides are imperative. The use of kreg jigs is extremely convenient as you will not need to measure and mark the spaces for the drawer slides. This will make it easier to mount metal drawer slides. Kreg jigs can be used for center, bottom or extension mounted drawers. A kreg jig is an inexpensive, yet extremely versatile piece of equipment.

Building Your Own Woodworking Jigs:

If you build your own woodworking jigs, you will save a lot of money in supplies. You can use inexpensive pieces of material, and scrap wood for making your own jigs. Because you will only be using the jig for one project, you do not want to spend too much money on materials. If you are planning on reusing your jigs, it is advisable to build with a stronger and more durable hardwood. It is easy to source instructions on making your own jigs in woodworking books or magazines. Instructions on making your own jig are also readily available on the internet, and can be printed and stored for future reference.

Jig Saw Blades

Merely because you love woodwork, it does not mean your workmanship is not a spare-time activity

A spare-time activity must be vested on. You would not have a difficult time doing so, as the affair is there in the first place. Hence, motivation and drive are apparently inherent as well.

Newcomers to woodworking often wonder what the necessary tools in starting up a workshop are. The solution varies from one woodworker to the next, because there's a tenacious list of required tools in the beginning. Plus, it depends upon the project.

For a good example, you travel to your nearest tool store to purchase a power tool. At present there's a diversity of manufacturers and naturally, prices differ as well. Like in any merchandise, the more expensive, and so the better the quality. Finer quality tools in woodwork have better design features and functions, in addition to a high tolerance in manufacturing, they in addition perform better.

Purchase the finest tool that you are able to afford. Start a budget on how much you're willing to spend on a specific tool. This is significant since you'll be using your tools on a frequent basis.

And if you're just starting out and you are able to only spend limited cash to establish your woodworking workshop, do not try for the absolute best then. You will be able to fall back on the ones that are relied on by most woodworkers that come in a reasonable price.

There are exclusions to the universal principle noted above. If woodworking is simply a spare-time activity you enjoy during the weekend, then you don't have to get the top-of-the-notch tools.

The key is acquiring a tool that's within your budget. But as often as possible, veer away from the cheapest tools and materials. They being cheap already tells something - these aren’t worth purchasing.

Here are the most common tools a woodworking newbie must have in his shop.

1. Electric Drill and Drill Bits - Electric drills are by far the first power tool purchased, they have so many uses besides drilling holes, there are attachments to turn them into paint mixers, sanders, screwdrivers, saws, grinders, lathes, the list goes on.

2. Electric Circular Saw - These can be very handy when cutting your wood pieces.  No need to break the bank on this, however.  Find one that’s easy for you to use and reliable.

3. Finishing Sander

These are used for sanding and finishing your projects. It can also be employed to smooth wood to clear out the edges.

4. Jig Saw - While not completely necessary, a good jig saw can help make your woodworking projects easier.  They can add some eye-catching detail to a piece and make cutting wood easier as well.

5. Table Saw

Comparable to the drill, this is an additional tool that you must own and invest in. Though there are a few cheap table saws simply they're not as powerful as the high-ticket ones. They do not work equally well as you desire too. Acquire a table saw with a strong motor, one that's powerful enough that it can be used time and time again. If not, the blade will drag during the course of you ripping wood. It may even burn a few of your precious designs and no woodworker would desire that. Again there are loads of plans for jigs for this work horse.

6. Router - Routers have become one of the most used tools in a workshop, possibly even more popular than a table saw. A well equipped shop will have both a plunge base and a fixed base router; it is now possible to get a combination kit where one machine has both bases.

7. Compound Miter Saw

These are portable and used to cut miters, long wood stock and moldings. A great deal easier to handle than the table saw. You will be able to find plans on the internet for a neat table for this tool.

8. Drill Press

This tool is a workhorse in the shop it can be use for drilling holes, sanding with a sanding drum attachment.

9. Biscuit Joiner

Nifty tool for joining pieces of wood together. The tool cuts pocket-sized slots in every side of the join. The biscuit is inserted and glued in between, binding the parts altogether.

10. Basic Hand Tools

Claw hammers are the most common types of hammers used for woodworking and general repairs around the home.

Screwdrivers are needed for almost every woodworking project.  Make sure you have various sizes of both Phillips head and flat head.

Wood chisels range in size from 1/4" to 2" wide in 1/8" graduations. They are available with wooden or plastic handles.

Tape measures come in a variety of widths and lengths. I would not recommend anything less than 3/4" wide for a tape over 6 feet long as they can not be extended out and remain rigid.

Clamps - Any project that is glued requires clamping to insure that the parts are bonded firmly in exactly the right position.

Finally, keep a wet / dry shop vacuum nearby so that you can quickly clean up wood shavings and dust. Keeping dust and wood particles to a minimum will reduce the risk of wood shop fires and help you breathe easier, too.

As a woodworking newcomer, you must have the best tools you are able to afford. However that also depends upon the projects that you plan on making. Prior to traveling to your closest home building provider to purchase your tools, think over what precisely you'll be constructing.

Men have this primeval instinct or desire to create with their own hands. This is the same desire or instinct that resulted to the first tools that helped man advance into creating civilizations. From the simple stone axe to hammers made of iron to power tools that run on electricity, these tools all have one common reason: to assist man in his creating processes.

Let's fast forward to the more recent times. Although it has long been stopped from showing, you may have seen an episode or two of Tim Allen's hit TV show, "Home Improvement." On every episode there's always a scene of Tim doing some projects in his workshop located right in his house. There you can see all the tools commonly used in such a workshop. You can see hammers, nails, rulers, wood planks, screws, and of course the power tools that are hanging on the walls or lying on top of the work tables. We would sometimes even see Tim making use of some of those power tools. One thing for sure, the power tools do make Tim's life so much easier.

Almost every handyman classifies his power tools in a much simpler category. Those power tools that have cords and those that are cordless. And what's the difference? It's in the convenience. It's much more convenient to use a cordless power tool because you don't have to worry about the cord being too short or getting in the way while you're working.

Batteries operate cordless power tools, so they last as long as the batteries will last. This is usually for hours on end as power tools were designed for long period of continuous use. Imagine the ease of using these power tools without the hassle of minding the cord every time you make a turn to do something.

One of the most popular power tools is the jig saw. What a weird name you might ask, but it's actually quite befitting. A jig saw is used in cutting curves, especially those of the arbitrary type. It is commonly used on wood, but it can also cut through other similar materials. The jig saw is very useful in cutting creative patterns.

And just like with other power tools, a jig saw (although the more common types are the old fashioned hand type) is also available in both corded and cordless versions. There is one thing the cordless jig saw will come very handy for - cutting of oddly shaped patterns, as there won't be any cords that can get entangled while you're cutting in every direction possible. Because that is what you will be doing when you make use of the jig saw on the elaborate patterns.

Power tools are very handy tools that should always be present in any serious handyman's workshop. Especially the cordless types as these provide the most convenience and ease of use among all the other tools. There are many brands to choose from so if you're considering purchasing one, do a little bit more research first.

Is it possible to make paper-mache hard enough to cut with a jig saw?

The thickest I could make it is 1/4 inch and I need it to be as really hard so I can cut it to the exact sizes I need.
I am thinking about making the slabs in wax paper so I can peal it way after the paper mache dries. Do I need to use any special kind of paper or glue-mix, or will flour-water and newspaper work?

It might work if you used really heavy paper and watered down paste instead of the traditional flour-water mix.

Tips For Using And Maintaining Woodworking Blades

Woodworkers have a lot to think about before diving into that first cut. Here's a few tips for keeping your saw blades in their most optimal cutting form.

Craftsmen often wonder how many teeth to look for in a saw blade, they often deliberate over which tooth-count will deliver the smoothest, cleanest cuts. The answer comes simply once you understand how the saw-blade-tooth system works. As a general rule, the more teeth your saw blade has, the smoother the cut. It's as simple as that. This rule applies to whichever saw you're using, whether it be a table saw, jig saw, scroll saw, etc. Saw blades with fewer teeth tend to slide more aggressively and produce a rougher cut. Essentially: -- The greater the tooth count - the smoother the cut.

Generally, it is recommended to have several blades available for each different saw. Having a variety of blades on hand makes different types of woodworking applications easier to perform. The easiest way to achieve the finest cuts is by staying true the specific application you're performing. When cross-cutting, for example, always use a cross-cutting blade - when riping, a riping blade - when cutting metal, always use a metal cutting blade, and so forth. There are also saw blades with tooth patters specific for finishing applications; finishing and melamine blades are designed with a finer tooth pattern for the smoothest, most refined cuts. Remember to: -- Use saw blades that stay true to your cutting applications.

It is important keep your blades free of pitch and sap. These are residues that collect on the blade with every cut. To avoid problematic pitch or sap slop, and residual build-up - simply keep your saw blades clean. Wipe them down after every use. It's beneficial to also clean your saw blades more thoroughly after every several uses. Periodically (and carefully) clean your blades with a diluted household cleaning solution. This should keep your blades shining and smooth, and ready to slice. Remember to: -- Keep your saw blades clean. It is also important to keep your saw blades sharp.

The sharpness of your blade determines (generally) the smoothness of your cut. When it becomes difficult to push your blade through your cutting materials, or if your blade is producing rough or choppy cuts - it's about time to have it sharpened. It typically costs around $20 - $30 per blade for a professional sharpening. It's also safer to keep your saw blades sharp; the less force exerted into the cutting process - the less likely a blade-related accident is to occur. Always: -- Keep your blades sharp.

To deviate from saw blades for a moment, I'll address the misconception that planer blades are not reversible. Most of them absolutely are! Get twice the action from your planer blades by simply turning them over. Most planer blades have two sharp cutting edges at either end (i.e. on the top and bottom) - this is a reversible planer blade. It is generally beneficial to also have a spare blade on hand, that way if one breaks or requires sharpening, your prepared with a spare. Like saw blades, it is important to keep your planer blades sharp. Depending on the blade's length, it typically runs about $15 - $20 to sharpen a planer blade. Rejoice: -- Most planer blades are reversible.

For the most effective cutting, keep your blades clean and sharp, and always use the appropriate blade for each application. If you follow these simple rules, your cuts should remain smooth and precise for the life of the blade. Remember, however, the most important tip when working with blades is to always be safe.
