Carpenters, what cordless set do you recommend?

I have just started woodworking and would like to start a cordless collection. I'll start with the basics: drill, circular, palm sander, router. Can you all recommend a good brand. I know Dewalt is top of the line but it is out of my price range. My father has a small set of Ryobi 18v and seems happy with it. Is this a good set? Please also recommend some other necessary tools. I have several hand tools: screwdrivers, plyers, clamps.
I'll probably start building simple projects: bookshelves, a ladder for a bunk bed, a child's drafting table.

There is no blanket brand that is best for every single tool. And to go cordless with every tool is not wise. No, Dewalt is not top of the line, they just have a rep. This is my list on many years experience.

Drills - Panasonic, yes Panasonic, makes the finest drills around. Pick up one of the cordless combo packs with a drill and impact driver and you will be astounded at the performance and accuracy of the tools. They are the only drill maker that delivers torque at even levels no matter what speed the chuck is spinning. In other words, other brands derive higher torque by spinning faster which makes for sloppy work if you dig in too deep or start off at top speed. These are the best cordless drills and priced near Milwaukees. I gave my Dewalt cordless to my Dad after discovering Panasonics. Don't buy a hammer drill unless you are doing extensive work with concrete drilling. If they are out of your price range, go Craftsman as their replacement batteries are dirt cheap. Keep a decent corded drill around just in case.

Circ Saw - Many fine brands out there, but Bosch fits my hand very well. Pick up the saw and see how it fits in your hand. Circ. saws must be comfortable or you will make sloppy cuts. If you need high power and are cutting very thick pieces of wood a worm drive Skil Saw is the way to go. Comfort and weight is key and Bosch works best for me in this dept. Cordless circ saws are a waste of money in my opinion. The battery life is horrific on any brand I have used. If these are too much money for you (Bosch circ saw is around $110), then I really don't know what to say. Just buy anything that is comfortable and in your price range.

Sanders - Porter Cable makes great sanders. Again, stay clear of cordless in this department as the batteries just can't keep up. If you are working on a tight budget, skip the sander all together and spend more on better saws and drills. Elbow grease replaces any sander at 1/100th the price.

Router - Porter Cable again in this dept. Honestly, I won't go near any other brand router. The true cost of a router begins AFTER you buy one. Bit sets are very expensive and you may be better off buying trim that matches the type of edges you want. Cut them to size and glue on the corners.

Those are the tools you listed. Cordless tools have advantages when used properly. Anything that runs for long periods of time (sander, jig saw, etc) will be a huge disappointment to you. If you absolutely must have one of those cordless combo sets and Dewalt is too expensive, go with Craftsman or Ryobi.

If all you have is some hand tools and you want to make furniture properly, be ready to shell out at least $1000 on power tools. It sounds like the things you want to work on are indoor projects. For the projects you listed, skip the circ saw and buy a miter saw.

Making things for around the house is very rewarding so keep at it. For shelves, go buy a $100 miter saw (Lowes has a Hitachi for $100 I believe as does Ryobi and Craftsman), wood glue, a Craftsman cordless drill (get corded if you do not already have one, cheap cordless drills can't match the power of a corded drill), a carpenters square, a level, and some screws. Sand the pieces first, assemble, and finish with some stain. Build up your skills with the basics first and things will make more sense when you go shopping for power tools. Have fun!

Anything You Can Think of Cordless Black

What do you think of when you think of cordless Black & Decker? You may think of small cordless screwdrivers or wimpy tools you only find at discount stores. While I don't think of cordless Black & Decker tools as industrial grade tools, they really have a wide variety of tools that you will find handy around the house, cabin or lake home.

The cordless Black & Decker lineup contains everything from you basic cordless screwdriver, to cordless drills, cordless scissors, tools for yard work including cordless mowers, hedge trimmers, weed trimmers and more. I have one of the cordless Black & Decker weed trimmers and while it doesn't have the power of my gas weed trimmer, it has more than enough to trim up around the house and it always starts. The gas trimmers that I have had typically work for a couple of seasons and then I have to rebuild the carb to keep it running.

One of the really neat tools I noticed in the cordless Black & Decker line is a chainsaw called the Alligator. This tool is a small cordless chainsaw with a clamp below the blade that bites down on the wood you are cutting. It really does look like an alligator! They also have a regular cordless chainsaw and a chainsaw that you can extend up on a pole to cut off limbs a little higher up. Again, these cordless Black & Decker tools don't look like something you would use every day but still, I they have some tools I have never even seen.

Maybe you are looking for a cordless screwdriver for you hobby shop or your camper. Again the cordless Black & Decker line up has several for you to chose from. You can get a very inexpensive tool that will be handy here and there or if you want something with a little more power, try their lithium screw drivers. Lithium tools offer more run time and power in a lighter weight tool that can charge very fast. Some of these tools have LED lights on them making them handy when working in dark corners, maybe like removing hinges inside a cabinet.

They also handle a variety of drills. While I still prefer having my heavy duty Bosch drill at my side, a smaller less powerful drill will work just fine around the house. While most of the cordless Black & Decker drills are fairly reasonably priced, you can afford to have one in your camper, your cabin or lake home. Many of times these tools are more than ample for simple odd jobs around the home like hanging pictures or drilling a small hole to run a cord or something else simple like this. If you do want a little more power, the cordless Black & Decker line includes 24 volt tools available in a combo kit.

One other tool that I guess you can call a cordless Black & Decker tool is their self adjusting wrench. This crescent wrench adjusts to the bolt head with just a touch. I have read a couple of reviews and while some have been able to break them, many felt they were very handy around the house.

So there you have it, a few thoughts on the cordless Black & Decker tool line up. This really doesn't do their line up justice. You just won't believe the cordless Black & Decker tools available.

How do I use a random orbit polisher to wax my car?

I bought a polisher thing and I want to know how I go about using it on the car? I tried using the wax that i would normally use on the car by hand and it seems to be absorbed into the sponge on the polisher..... what products do i need to get to do this. I have seen it done with one of these things at the ocal car wash and I want to know how I can utilize it. Thanks

did you let the wax to haze over or dry some before removing. if your taking it off before dried your defeating the purpose!

Basic Woodworking Joints

Nowadays, it is possible to build almost any piece of furniture without being able to tell a dovetail from a bridle joint or ever touching a chisel. But if you want to work wood or if your interest is in repairing, restoring or reproducing traditional furniture, you will need to know the purposes of cut joints and the way to make them.

Cutting traditional joints is work for hand tools; the right ones, correctly used without rushing.
The tools you need

The tools required are few and mostly unsophisticated. Jigs, which can save time setting out when the same joint must be repeated several times, are available. But they are limited in the size of work-piece that can be accommodated and require much the same level of concentration in use as tools used freehand. You can also make your own jigs.

A basic setting and marking out kit consists of a try-square (for angles other than 90° use a sliding bevel), a pencil and a marking knife, a straight-edged rule (preferably stainless steel) and marking and mortise gauges.

The four basic tools for making joints are a saw, a chisel, a mallet and a plane. You do not need to use all four for every joint. For some joints you need only use a saw - usually a tenon saw, but fine cabinet work may call for a dovetail saw, which is similar but smaller. Even finer work - on small drawers and boxes or on models, say - may need a gents saw, which has a straight handle and very small teeth. A coping saw is useful for cutting out the waste between dovetails and pins.

Many joints require chisels - the most satisfactory type for general use is the bevel-edge chisel, in widths from 6.5mm upwards. A block or smoothing plane is needed to level the surfaces of the joint after it has been assembled. Rebate, moulding and plough planes could also be used to make the work easier. A router makes a better job of smoothing and levelling the bottom of housings than a chisel.

Joints
The naming of joints is not always consistent: some are called one thing by one craftsman and something else by another. Where alternative names are common, we have given both.

A joint is a fixed junction between two or more pieces of wood: it should not be flexible. The simplest is the butt joint, in which two surfaces are brought together in the same plane and joined with glue or mechanical devices, such as pins or screws, or a combination of both. A dowelled joint is basically a butt joint secured with glued-in wooden pins - dowels.

If you want to be able to handle any do-it-yourself projects in your home, make sure you have a work shop that has everything you need. Make sure you have the basic tools and any job, whether it is sawing, nailing, sanding, shaping or sharpening can be done.

There is virtually no limit to the number of tools that are available for the home handyman to invest in. Just check out any hardware store or look in the garages of your neighbors. But many times it is overkill since so many of the tools do the same thing. With a basic arsenal of five tools, you can tackle just about any reasonable job. From there, you can start to develop a complete workshop as you get more proficient.

A basic important tool any handyman wants is a circular saw. Cut large curves or straight lines with this saw; all you have to do is set a board on the top of sawhorses, and you have a work surface to hold the wood to be cut.

If you are planning on any large wood working projects, you will need a radial arm saw or a table saw. Pick a saw that can rotate to different angles if you want to make picture frames or mouldings. These angles will permit you to make 45 degree miter cuts that you need for corners.

A small electric sander will be invaluable in your woodworking jobs. You can do hand sanding, but a belt sander that is electric powered is faster and gives the finished product a smooth, professional look. Strips of wood for moulding or furniture are smooth and can just be painted or stained.

This is the hallmark of a quality wood worker: if the tools are sharp, you can cut finely and work in detailed patterns that look very professional.

If you want to do quality work, you should invest in quality brand tools. If you buy any of these, you know you will have a top notch tool. There is some variation in price, but each of these should last decades and be a good investment for your workshop.

After you have been working in your workshop for awhile you will notice pretty quickly that you could use a few more hands! In fact there are some times when you will wish you had ten more hands. Because it's impractical to have five more people in the wood shop lending you their hands, you will need to invest in some clamps for your shop.

There are a lot of different clamps that will be able to assist you in your woodworking projects and you will want to build up a healthy supply of all of them. Some of the most popular clamps for your shop are C-Clamps. Most people will tell you to buy these big. These clamps will hold together a wide variety of projects in glue up phase, and it is important that you buy a quality clamp, because you do not want it breaking on you in a critical point.

Another great clamp to have in your arsenal is a band clamp, which is also sometimes known as a web clamp. These clamps are made with nylon mesh straps and they utilize a mechanical ratchet to cinch them up tight. These are indispensable clamps when you are trying to clamp up odd shapes or sizes and they are great for corners as well.

Corner clamps are also a great addition. These clamps mount to your work bench and they are used to hold two pieces of material in a perfect 90 degree angle for glue up or other purpose. They are perfect for making picture frames of course but also for door frames, drawers and a wide variety of other projects.

Pipe clamps are also great for any wood shop. They are what their name implies, they utilize a bar or a pipe in order to clamp up the project. You can choose pipes of different lengths depending on the project you are working on.

Clamps are an absolutely essential hand tool for any wood shop, and most wood workers will say that you can never have too many clamps. However, clamps can get expensive so it is probably a good idea to build up your supply slowly. You will never regret having too many clamps, however if you do not have enough and you are in the middle of a project, you will regret not having enough clamps without a doubt!

The problem faced by most people when starting any new hobby is they know what they want to do, but have lack any idea where to start. In this case, the first step is to figure out what you want to make. Was there a specific item you wanted, such as a table or chair? Were you just looking for something to do to pass the time? Or perhaps your spouse said your needed a hobby! I have a lot of hobbies, and I am always starting something new, but the first step I always take is to ask myself where I want to end up. In the case of carpentry woodworking, it's very helpful to peruse a large number of projects to really find what your interested in.

Once you have come to terms with what you want to make, the next most important step is space consideration. The amount of space you will need is directly proportional to the size of the items that you will be making. For example, if you want to make small craft projects, and you only require a scroll saw and perhaps a few assorted hand tools, space will be minimal. However if you intend to get into cabinetry, the space requirements increase significantly, in order to accommodate a table saw, and numerous other large bench tools. Most people interested in a large workshop will setup in the basement or the garage.

Next, you will want to make sure any workspace you choose is dry, or can be kept dry through the use of a dehumidifier. Most bench tools have uncoated steel tables which will rust with time. Additionally, if there is any chance of flooding or sewer backup (in the case of a basement), you will want to make sure your tools are elevated off the floor. It's not only bad for the equipment, but a serious safety hazard as well.

Once you have determined you have a dry area to work with, you will need to examine the power requirements of the equipment you will be using. Higher horsepower equipment will need to be run on 220v - even though some will run less smooth on 110v. Most homes have 220v capability but usually require rewiring to accomplish it. Be sure to consult a qualified electrician before making any decisions on wiring. Obviously if you'll be making small projects, most smaller bench tools and hand tools run on 110v.

Next, you have to tackle the dust collection and ventilation issue, which is also an issue of space and power. Hardwood dust is dangerous from a health perspective, and all wood dusts present a potential fire hazard. Dust collection equipment comes in all shapes and sizes from HEPA filtered shop vacs to sophisticated systems that collect dust at the source and route to a large fabric bag - all with different collection efficiencies. In addition, there are room filtration systems to remove the very fine (and much more dangerous) dust particles from the air.

Now that you have an idea of what you want to build and you're certain you have the space and power, you can start planning which tools you need and design a room layout. There are many online resources that can help you plan your shop layout!

As stated earlier, it's much better to get a head start and determine what you want to build before investing money in a lot of equipment, as you will end up with a lot of stuff you don't need. Most people think "power tools" when they think of woodworking, but hand tools are also important for woodworking. If you are just starting out in woodworking, you want to make sure you get the right tools, and not spend a lot on unnecessary items.

You will need a number of hand tools to properly shape wood:

Clamps-It is a good idea to have a variety of sizes, but they do not cost much, and they last a long time, so used ones will serve as well as new ones.

Bench chisels-Get about 6 of these, ranging from one quarter of an inch to one inch.

Wire brushes-Good, stiff ones

Saws-At least a back saw, a tenon and a dovetail saw. They get a lot of use, so if you buy them used, make sure the teeth are not damaged, but you can have the sharpened.

Files-Start with a ten inch bastard mill file; you can add others later.

Hammer-A good quality 16 ounce hammer.

Mallet-Needed for driving chisels

Allen wrenches-Various sizes

Screwdrivers-A set of various sizes in both Phillips head and flat head.

Awls-Marking and Scratching

Pliers-Channel lock and Needle nose

Scrapers-A paint scraper and a hand scraper

The ideal way to set up a woodworking shop is to buy a small quantity of good quality tools rather than a lot of cheap hand tools. You'll only end up paying more in the long run if you buy cheap tools, since they will have to be replaced often. Brand names to look for are Armstrong, Stanley and Snap On.

You can buy used tools if you look for ones in good condition. There are many antique or German made hand tools on sale. Hand tools last longer than power tools, since they are no mechanical parts to cause problems, so older ones are not a problem. Older hand tools are also frequently of better quality than newer ones.

Many hand tools can be found at yard or garage sales, but you may have to search a lot to get everything you need. Check the newspapers for ones that are offering tools (sellers frequently mention the types of merchandise they have)and visit as many yard sales as you can to build your collection.

Another excellent source for used hand tools is flea markets. Since there are so many more tables, you can cover a lot more ground than you can at garage or yard sales. Just remember that flea market merchants are used to haggling over price, so don't pay the first price they quote, you will probably be paying too much.

At both yard sales and flea markets, you can get a better bargain if you wait till the end of the day, since the sellers may then be happy just to get rid of their stuff. Another hint is that if someone is selling a number of tools, they may be willing to give you a quantity discount.
