Cobalt drills are not coated. They maintain their hardness throughout and can be resharpened without loss of hardness. Stay away from the imports. I have found that the best cobalt and HS drill bits are Cleveland twist drills. Also, I'm not a big fan of the Drill Doctor. With a little practice you can achieve better results sharpening them by hand on a bench grinder.

The End Of The Beam Drill Line?

For structural steel fabricators - the guys who cut, weld, shape and create joists, trusses and beams for office towers, hospitals, bridges, arenas - the last word in automation over the past several years has been the CNC beam drill line. A beam drill line is a machine tool that uses a conveyor to move a steel beam or "girder"into position, then drills holes - specifically bolt holes - in various locations along the steel piece, following the details provided in an engineering drawing of what the end product is to be.

An automated beam drill line is a big step in efficiency, compared to the traditional way of making various measurements on the bare beam to mark it as indicated by the engineering drawing, then drilling the holes manually - typically using a standard drill press. This time-consuming approach was an all manual process.

The Computer-Numerical-Controlled (CNC) beam drill line can download the digital drawing file, assess exactly where the holes belong, "probe" the beam using the drill head and positioners, then drill through the steel at very high speeds using super-hard carbide drill bits and cutting fluids. The bolt holes are made seemingly in the "blink of an eye" and most of the labor is getting the on and off the line and uploading the digital drawing into the machine's software.

That's a huge advantage over the "old fashioned" method, but there's a certain limitation, and it's a pretty important one. THERE ARE TYPICALLY MANY MORE MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS THAT MUST BE DONE ON THE STEEL BEAM. Cutting different features (such as copes, notches, bevels) into the , trimming off the end of the section to get it to the required length, and "scribing" different characters and symbols into the workpiece are additional operations typically required on many steel beams. How many of these can be performed by a CNC beam drill line? Sadly, none of them.

In summary, while a beam drill line boosts productivity of drilling bolt holes, it doesn't automate any of these other tasks.

A radically different fabrication method has come to the fabrication industry that performs hole drilling operation just as fast and accurately as the beam drill line, but performs a comparable level of automation to the many additional operations done to structural beams. It uses high-definition plasma cutting to thermally cut through or scribe the steel.

This technology is similar to the beam drill line in that the steel is transferred into the plasma torch vicinity, the digital file containing all the feature information is loaded into the plasma machine's PC-based control system, and the cutting torch tip touches the workpiece to figure out (and remember) precisely where it's located and envelope and surface features. Then the plasma torch starts cutting bolt holes . . . and notches, copes, cutouts, bevel cuts, miter cuts . . . the full range of operations associated with structural steel fabrication.

The automated plasma cutting machines can produce all these needed features, going from one side of the beam to the other side. When it's done, all the needed operations are finished - there's no need to move the steel piece to another operation. The plasma machines are kind of a "one stop shop" for fabricators.

Different versions of these plasma machines are coming on the market, with a variety of capacities and prices. As for the venerable beam drill line . . . the heyday of beam drill line technology has come and is on its way out.

Drywall Installation: Do You Have the Tools and the Elbow Grease?

So, you’re a real do-it-yourselfer, huh?  A big fan of the HGTV Monday night line-up?  Perhaps you write to Extreme Home Makeover’s Ty Pennington on a daily basis, letting him know that you, too, like to tear down walls. And not in the metaphorical sense, but literally.  If you see yourself in any three of those characterizations, then maybe you’ll fancy the idea of bypassing a contractor when it comes to installing drywall in your home.  Well luckily for you, drywall installation is pretty straightforward, though it does require the necessary tools and some much needed patience.  If you already have random tools lying around your house like dimplers and T-squares, then you may be in good shape.  Otherwise, hiring a contractor will be a whole lot simpler.

What is it?

Drywall, which has more pseudonyms than Puff Daddy (among them gypsum board, wallboard, plasterboard, Sheetrock, Gibraltar board, and if you’re in a hurry, just “boardâ€), is the most common source used for constructing interior walls and ceilings.  Basically, drywall is comprised of gypsum plaster pressed between two thick sheets of paper, with a coarse paper on the back and a smooth paper on the finish side.  You can generally find panels of drywall at any standard hardware store, or if you plan on using larger sheets, you could even try ordering from a building supply store (which is most likely where contractors get their materials).

Installing drywall consists of taking measurements (to make sure your drywall panels correctly correspond to the walls dimensions), cutting panels, screwing or nailing the panels into either the ceiling or wall joists, and then finishing the drywall by filling in and leveling any gaps or indentations made by the screws.  It may not be the most difficult home makeover project, but if it’s your first time, expect the results to be decent at best.

Specialized tools are key in helping the process of drywall installation run smoothly.  Naturally, professional contractors carry these types of tools, but unless you’ve personally installed drywall before, it’s unlikely that you’ll find them in your toolbox.  Instruments such as a drywall hammer (with a convex head that creates a dimple around the nail head without breaking the paper), a specialized electric drywall screw gun, a set of taping knives, and ring shank nails will not only make the job easier, but will also ensure a professional-looking drywall job.  If you get the feeling that you’ll be installing drywall several times in the distant future, then maybe you won’t mind buying a bunch of specialized drywall tools.  Otherwise, it may be a bit of a hassle.

Who needs it?

You may be looking for drywall installation if you’re refurbishing your home or maybe if you’re trying to sell your home.  Perhaps you’d like to get rid of someone’s previous bad drywall installation, most evident through small visible bumps in the wall or ceiling known as butt joints (no, I will not make a joke).  Also, older homes with popcorn ceilings (which sounds delicious but is apparently outdated), also known as acoustic ceilings, may want to give their home a more modern look by hiring contractors who specialize in drywall installation and popcorn ceiling removal.

Benefits

Drywall installation is renowned for being the quickest form of interior finishing and requires significantly less manpower than older techniques.  Therefore, it should be a relatively quick job for contractors (depending, of course, on how large the area they’re working on is), and possibly an easier job for the DIY crowd.  Put it this way, it’s a lot easier and safer than re-wiring your house.

Risks

The process of drywall installation is not too risky, though there are some general rules that do-it-yourselfers should be aware of.  First of all, drywall should not be installed in freezing conditions, as expansion can be a problem, as well as the loss of strength and adhesion of the boards.

Also, as mentioned earlier, butt joints (I have too much respect for myself to make a joke at this point) can plague those new to the drywall game, as they are sometimes unavoidable (they are basically formed when the short, un-tapered edges of two different drywall sheets meet).  In general, the finishing aspect of drywall installation can be rough on do-it-yourselfers.

THE BOTTOM LINE

If you’re feeling brave, or want to prove to your wife that you’re a man, DIY drywall installation could be for you.  Though without the proper tools and technique, the drywall will most likely look like it was done by an amateur, which it was.  It may be in everyone’s best interest if you just call a contractor, seeing as how true professionals will be able to get the job done with the best results in the timeliest fashion.  Those guys certainly know how to take care of those butt joints (which was what crack cocaine was originally called… sorry, I couldn’t help myself).

When building cabinets, furniture and other such woodworking projects, the best joining method to use can be a looming question. Craftsmen strive for the strongest, most durable and smooth joints possible, and to achieve this - craftsmen strive also, for the best joinery technique. There are many methods of quality wood joinery, some of the most popular methods being biscuit (or plate) joinery, and pocket-hole joinery. Biscuit joinery and pocket-hole technology each provide exceptionally strong joints in a simple, reliable process. Each of these techniques offer a different set of features that fasten joints in different and effective ways.

Biscuit or plate joinery involves the insertion of a biscuit into an oval, or crescent shaped slot that is cut into opposite edges of two pieces of wood. Biscuits are pre-cut, oval-shaped pieces of compressed wood that range in size from 1/2in to 2-1/4in in length. There are also biscuits available in plastic, aluminum, and steel for special applications, generally however, wood biscuits are the most prominently used. Biscuits (dabbed with glue) are inserted into specially cut slots in the wood that are shaped identically to the biscuit, the two pieces of wood are clamped together to set, and thus form a strong, durable joint. The biscuits also tend to soak up the glue applied to them before insertion which causes them to swell and make the joint tighter, and stronger. Porter Cable, DEWALT, and Makita each offer high quality plate joiners with unique, and individual features to help meet your needs, and build your joints better.

Porter Cable offers a Deluxe Plate Joiner Kit with a powerful 7.5 amps and 10,000 rpm. This joiner has many features that simplify the joining process, including: a precise micro height-adjustment knob to keep biscuits exactly centered, and a 1in O.D. (outer diameter) dust port that works with standard bags or can simply hook up to a vacuum. The DW682K has a fence tilt of 0 to135 degrees with a positive adjustable stop at 90 degrees; and, for increased cutting control and stability, the bale handle is attached to the fence rather than the motor. The joiner also has a lock-on trigger for continual use and a supremely accurate (at any angle) hight scale to precisely measure positions. Porter Cable's plate joiner has seven-position rotating depth stop to accommodate a variety of biscuit sizes and depths, and a spindle lock mechanism for simple blade changes. To ensure the most accurate joints, the DW682K features a dual rack and pinion system that keeps the blade and fence always parallel as you work - every time. The one piece fence is also adjustable with a 0-90 degree tilt, and, at zero degrees, a flush cut can be made without removing the fence. Additionally, the fence has a locating notch at 45 degrees that allows indexing off the outside surface of a mitered joint: in other words, the fence has a positive lock at 45 degrees to keep your joints always accurate. Makita also provides an excellent option in biscuit joinery. Their 3901 plate joiner runs on 5.6 amps, and with a no load speed of 10,000 rpm. Although with slightly less amps, the tool is strong enough to make the tight, and lasting joints craftsmen expect from biscuit joinery. Makita's joiner has a one-touch 6 depth setting that allows for immediate depth change when working, and accommodates most common biscuit sizes. Makita's 3901 also features a shaft lock for fast, simple blade changes, and easy to operate cam locks for added security. With a cast aluminum pivot fence with positive stops at 0, 45, and 90 degrees the joiner is always accurate and precise, and is designed to quickly and simply make strong and durable plate joints. Types Drill Bits You Can Choose From

Many a time when you are stuck during drilling a hole, you need a specific bit to get the job done. Let's understand the types of drill bits designed for specific purposes.

Adjustable bit: comes with an adjustable cutter to bore holes of varying sizes. Used for drilling holes for piping or wiring where a rough cut is acceptable.

Around-the-corner bit: to cut curved holes in tight corners with an angled cutting surface.

Auger Bits: designed to drill holes in wooden material. The drilling end has a screw head so that the bit can self feed.

Brad-point drills: similar to standard bits but have a sharpened point that makes it easier to start in wood. Drills cleaner holes than a spade bit.

Counterbore: a drill bit which permits a screw to be driven beneath the woods surface. The hole can then be filled with a plug.

Countersink bit: has an angled tip that's designed to form a depression for screw heads.

Drill Saw bit: Used to cut holes in metal and wood. Can enlarge existing holes.

Expansion bit: another term for adjustable bit. An expansion bit uses an adjustable cutter to bore holes of varying sizes.

Fly Cutter: used on a drill press to cut circles. The diameter of the circles can be adjusted by changing the cutter setting.

Forstner Bit: used to a create a flat bottomed hole in wood, a mortise can be formed by cutting overlapping holes. Also used to a create a segment of a hole at the edge of a board. Use only in a drill press.

Glass bit: has a carbide tip for drilling through glass.

Hole saws: cuts holes from 1" to 6" in diameter, have a center bit for guiding the cutting edge of the saw.
Masonry bits: have carbide tips for drilling holes in masonry, use at speeds below 400rpm.

MultiSpur bit: drills holes large enough to run pipe or conduit through. A threaded screw in the center of the cutting circle pulls the work towards the cutting edge.
Nail Spinner: used to start finishing nails, prevents wood from splintering as it is driven in. A hammer is used to finish the job.

Reamer Bit: a tapered bit that can be used to fit into an existing hole either to enlarge it.

Rotary Files: used for the same purpose as a conventional file, great for expanding holes in metal and cleaning up rough edges.

Paint Mixers: consist of a shaft with fan type blades. Put the shaft into the paint before rotating to avoid splatter.

Plastic Bit: has a tip that prevents splintering when drilling in plastic. Drill slowly and reduce pressure as you reach the other side of you work.

Plug Cutter: can be used to cut out cylindrical shapes from wood. These small cylindrical plugs are used to cover screw heads. This bit should only be used in drill press.

Screw driving bits: used for driving screws.
Screw Pilot bit: used to drill a pilot hole, body hole and countersink all at the same time.

Spade bit: has a sharpened point and used for drilling large diameter holes in wood. These bits work best at fast drilling speeds, but remember to start slowly.

Step Bit: a tapered bit with up to 13 diameters as the bit penetrates the work it drills a hole with an increasingly large diameter.

Twist drills: standard drill bits, used for drilling small diameter holes in wood and metal.

Wire Brushes: used to clean up metal, remove rust. Available as either a cup or a wheel with wire brush on the rim.

Woodscrew bit: available in a variety of sizes to match particular screw sizes. Woodscrews are used to drill a pilot hole, body hole and countersink all at the same time.

Dewalt cordless drill and rock drilling.?

I have a cave that Im trying to rig drops in and I was curious as to if I could use a standard cordless dewalt drill to drill a 2-3in deep hole in limestone. I usually drill the holes then hammer the bolts in with the anchor. Can I use a standard dewalt cordless drill for this job? How long you think the job will take to drill a hole that deep in that type of rock with that sorta drill? What kinda bit do I need?
I dont destroy caves i make them accessible

Limestone is pretty soft so that might work. Don't get too attached to your drill bits though! But please, try to destroy as little of the cave as possible. Caves are cool.
