Are dewalt drills good?

I've managed to burn out the motor on my black and decker drill whilst fitting door closers to fire doors and am needing to replace it.

im a builder in the uk ..and yes black and decker do own dewalt ..but that's where the tie ends ...i personally wont touch black and decker except for workmates ..whereas i have had a dewalt drill / driver for more than ten years ...its put in over 250.000 screws ...its never let me down and although there is a bit of wear in the chuck it still works perfectly ...iv been buying tools for over 40 years ...bought every type ..and the dewalt comes out top

Hahahaha! Iv got that exact drill! And I bought it from lowes in Johnson City in America! And I cant find a 230v charger here! -So I have to plug it into a 110v transformer onsite.

You can buy 1 there and you can use it over here just chop the 2pin american plug off the end and put a 16amp 110v plug onto it the hertz over there are different (60hz) compared to our (50hz) but that doesnt make any difference

Carpenters, what cordless set do you recommend?

I have just started woodworking and would like to start a cordless collection. I'll start with the basics: drill, circular, palm sander, router. Can you all recommend a good brand. I know Dewalt is top of the line but it is out of my price range. My father has a small set of Ryobi 18v and seems happy with it. Is this a good set? Please also recommend some other necessary tools. I have several hand tools: screwdrivers, plyers, clamps.
I'll probably start building simple projects: bookshelves, a ladder for a bunk bed, a child's drafting table.

There is no blanket brand that is best for every single tool. And to go cordless with every tool is not wise. No, Dewalt is not top of the line, they just have a rep. This is my list on many years experience.

Drills - Panasonic, yes Panasonic, makes the finest drills around. Pick up one of the cordless combo packs with a drill and impact driver and you will be astounded at the performance and accuracy of the tools. They are the only drill maker that delivers torque at even levels no matter what speed the chuck is spinning. In other words, other brands derive higher torque by spinning faster which makes for sloppy work if you dig in too deep or start off at top speed. These are the best cordless drills and priced near Milwaukees. I gave my Dewalt cordless to my Dad after discovering Panasonics. Don't buy a hammer drill unless you are doing extensive work with concrete drilling. If they are out of your price range, go Craftsman as their replacement batteries are dirt cheap. Keep a decent corded drill around just in case.

Circ Saw - Many fine brands out there, but Bosch fits my hand very well. Pick up the saw and see how it fits in your hand. Circ. saws must be comfortable or you will make sloppy cuts. If you need high power and are cutting very thick pieces of wood a worm drive Skil Saw is the way to go. Comfort and weight is key and Bosch works best for me in this dept. Cordless circ saws are a waste of money in my opinion. The battery life is horrific on any brand I have used. If these are too much money for you (Bosch circ saw is around $110), then I really don't know what to say. Just buy anything that is comfortable and in your price range.

Sanders - Porter Cable makes great sanders. Again, stay clear of cordless in this department as the batteries just can't keep up. If you are working on a tight budget, skip the sander all together and spend more on better saws and drills. Elbow grease replaces any sander at 1/100th the price.

Router - Porter Cable again in this dept. Honestly, I won't go near any other brand router. The true cost of a router begins AFTER you buy one. Bit sets are very expensive and you may be better off buying trim that matches the type of edges you want. Cut them to size and glue on the corners.

Those are the tools you listed. Cordless tools have advantages when used properly. Anything that runs for long periods of time (sander, jig saw, etc) will be a huge disappointment to you. If you absolutely must have one of those cordless combo sets and Dewalt is too expensive, go with Craftsman or Ryobi.

If all you have is some hand tools and you want to make furniture properly, be ready to shell out at least $1000 on power tools. It sounds like the things you want to work on are indoor projects. For the projects you listed, skip the circ saw and buy a miter saw.

Making things for around the house is very rewarding so keep at it. For shelves, go buy a $100 miter saw (Lowes has a Hitachi for $100 I believe as does Ryobi and Craftsman), wood glue, a Craftsman cordless drill (get corded if you do not already have one, cheap cordless drills can't match the power of a corded drill), a carpenters square, a level, and some screws. Sand the pieces first, assemble, and finish with some stain. Build up your skills with the basics first and things will make more sense when you go shopping for power tools. Have fun!

Anything You Can Think of Cordless Black

What do you think of when you think of cordless Black & Decker? You may think of small cordless screwdrivers or wimpy tools you only find at discount stores. While I don't think of cordless Black & Decker tools as industrial grade tools, they really have a wide variety of tools that you will find handy around the house, cabin or lake home.

The cordless Black & Decker lineup contains everything from you basic cordless screwdriver, to cordless drills, cordless scissors, tools for yard work including cordless mowers, hedge trimmers, weed trimmers and more. I have one of the cordless Black & Decker weed trimmers and while it doesn't have the power of my gas weed trimmer, it has more than enough to trim up around the house and it always starts. The gas trimmers that I have had typically work for a couple of seasons and then I have to rebuild the carb to keep it running.

One of the really neat tools I noticed in the cordless Black & Decker line is a chainsaw called the Alligator. This tool is a small cordless chainsaw with a clamp below the blade that bites down on the wood you are cutting. It really does look like an alligator! They also have a regular cordless chainsaw and a chainsaw that you can extend up on a pole to cut off limbs a little higher up. Again, these cordless Black & Decker tools don't look like something you would use every day but still, I they have some tools I have never even seen.

Maybe you are looking for a cordless screwdriver for you hobby shop or your camper. Again the cordless Black & Decker line up has several for you to chose from. You can get a very inexpensive tool that will be handy here and there or if you want something with a little more power, try their lithium screw drivers. Lithium tools offer more run time and power in a lighter weight tool that can charge very fast. Some of these tools have LED lights on them making them handy when working in dark corners, maybe like removing hinges inside a cabinet.

They also handle a variety of drills. While I still prefer having my heavy duty Bosch drill at my side, a smaller less powerful drill will work just fine around the house. While most of the cordless Black & Decker drills are fairly reasonably priced, you can afford to have one in your camper, your cabin or lake home. Many of times these tools are more than ample for simple odd jobs around the home like hanging pictures or drilling a small hole to run a cord or something else simple like this. If you do want a little more power, the cordless Black & Decker line includes 24 volt tools available in a combo kit.

One other tool that I guess you can call a cordless Black & Decker tool is their self adjusting wrench. This crescent wrench adjusts to the bolt head with just a touch. I have read a couple of reviews and while some have been able to break them, many felt they were very handy around the house.

So there you have it, a few thoughts on the cordless Black & Decker tool line up. This really doesn't do their line up justice. You just won't believe the cordless Black & Decker tools available.

Various Drill Bits For Cordless Tools

Drill bits are an integral part of any drill machine which is used to bore cylindrical holes in different materials like metal, wood, plastics, etc. The choice of a drill bit depends on your requirement. If you are looking at a few quick handy tools a set of steel twisted bits and a few masonry bits would be sufficient but if you are working on the floor then you would require bits which are larger and or designed for a specific purpose/material.

There are many types of drill bits designed for a specific purpose. For example the steel twist bits. The twist bits are useful while drilling metal sheets and can be used for wood, plastic and similar material. Most of the twist steel bits are made up of either High Speed Steel or Carbon Steel.

Both drill bits serve a different purpose like the carbon steel drill bit is used for drilling wood and not metal. The steel twisted bits are also available coated with Titanium Nitride (TiN). These drill bits display a typical gold like color. This coating gives the drill bit more hardness and also a self lubricating property.

Sharpening the blades or drilling areas regularly keeps the bits in shape and hence is cost effective. You can use a drill sharpener, a grindstone jig or an oilstone to do this job. Moreover sharpening the twist drill bits the Titanium Nitride coating can be destroyed. By forming a correct angle at the tip while drilling you can extend the life of the of your drill bit.

I found a cordless drill and i need a charger do i need to get a specific one to the drill or to the Battery ?

I found a Tooltec 18v cordless hammer drill but no charger are there specific types of charger to types of batterey or is it to the drill itself can i use the charger from any drill with an 18v removable power pack or the battereys unique to the drill itself or are they all a standard fitting and where can i get one?

sorry mate. each cordless comes with its own version of charger. batteries in some cases are inter changeable.admittedly not very often. check out the local tool mart and see how much a charger is. if its more than £e30.oo , stuff it . tooltec sounds like ,no torque,no gears worth speaking off. if you can t get the charger and a spare battery for under a tenner,forget it .waste of money. invest in a makita. i ve worked with makita for 25 years, and they are the most reliable easy to use ,hard wearing tools around . think about it.

One tool that you'll love having is a quality chisel set. You'll put them to great use. An affordable type is the Rockler chisel. Go ahead and get a few different sizes that you'll need, basically from about ½ inch to 2 inches wide. When you use the chisel you can either use your hand or a wood mallet.

In order keep things sturdy and in place while you glue them together for instance are wood clamps. These will be one of your most useful tools in your collection. The great thing is that they're not that expensive at all, and many times you find them in good condition when you buy them used. As you see them offered cheap, pick them up, you'll thank yourself for it.

Squares are vital for accurate measuring. You'll need a carpenter square or a framing square. A try square is usually used when making furniture. They come in various sizes from 3 to 12 inches. Find squares that are marked in inches and metric. A combination square has two pieces: a head and a steel blade. It's a great tool for measuring forty-five or ninety degree angles.

Next you'll need drills. They come both corded and cordless. Corded drills work better and are less expensive. You'll want to look for drills that include reverse, variable speed controls and attachments for a drill press as added features. If you'd rather have a cordless drill for the freedom to roam, look for high voltage batteries to be sure it will have sufficient power. Find a model with two batteries, therefore one can be charging while you're working with the other. You'll need a variety of bits for your woodworking projects.

Hand planes are constructed of wood or steel and are used for a variety of purposes. You'll use the jackplane for rough shaping. These come in 12 to 15 inch sizes. For trimming you'll need a block plane. Use Smoothing planes for finer cuts - these are about 8 or 9 inches long.

The Internet is a great place to look for discounts on woodworking tools. As with anything buying the better known brand names that have a good warranty, which with tools can be rather outstanding. You may never have to purchase the same tool ever again through your lifetime if you're smart about your purchase.

How do I remove the chuck from my 36V Dewalt cordless drill?

Most chucks are removed as follows:

Open the chuck all the way and look down inside. There is probably a screw inside at the bottom. Remove this screw. It may be left hand thread, depends on the model.

Now the hard part. The chuck is usually screwed on pretty tight. Tighten something "L" shaped into the chuck. Hit this "L" shaped item with a hammer to try to break the hold the threads have on the chuck. Once this is done, you should be able to screw it off by hand. You need that impact shock to break the hold.

I usually chuck something inside where I can get either a hammer drill or impact wrench on it to unscrew it.

It can be a pain, but it will come if you keep at it.

If it was in line with one terminal it would be a thermistor to control charging. If it's across it's probably a diode to control kickback from the motor coil when you release the trigger. Almost any diode will have a reverse voltage rating be more than twice the battery voltage, and 3 amps forward current rating should be fine.

is this cordless drill good?

I need to use a drill to make stuff with wood and drill holes in a regular wall but will it have enough power to use with a hammer drill attachment? ( used to drill into brick )

the drill would be fine for putting in screws or drilling holes, and would probably drill into brick just fine with a masonary bit, but if you are going to be drilling into brick a lot, you are going to want a hammerdrill. there isn't a "hammerdrill attachment" you can buy, it has to do with how the drill is made. if you want a cordless drill that is also a hammerdrill you have to look for a cordless hammerdrill/driver. here is one for you to check out.

Modern Power Tools - the Lithium Ion Cordless Drill

Power tools are essential for those jobs, which require more intense workmanship that ordinary tools cannot handle. A power tool is basically a tool, which is powered by an electric motor or alternatively a compressed air motor or petrol driven motor. They are typically used in the construction industry but are also used around the house to complete those otherwise hard to do jobs. Power tools are used for cutting, drilling, shaping, grinding, painting, sanding and polishing. Machine tools are a form of power tools used in metal work. It is not uncommon for the same power tool to be used both in wood and metal work.

The first used power tool was the lathe. Power tools were initially developed during the time of the industrial revolution. When factories began to use power tools to drive belts from overhead shafts. The main power source was a water wheel or later a steam engine. These tools were stationary until the introduction of the electric motor in the 1880s, which made the self powered stationary and portable tools we know today possible. The electric motor has remained the preferred source by which stationary power tools are driven. These tools use a cord but what has become increasingly popular for portable power tools is the battery. However batteries still have limitations because of they run out and lack sustaining power. Cost of buying and maintaining the use of batteries keep the cordless versions in lower demand on the market. Nailers and paint sprayers more frequently use air pressure, while chain saws, weed eaters and lawn motors have a preference for petrol driven motors.

One of the most popular power tools is the cordless drill, which is a type of electric drill but instead of being connected to a wall socket uses rechargeable batteries. Typically cordless drills come in the hammer drill configuration and mostly have a clutch setting, which allows them to be used for driving screws. In order to continue working without much interruption the tradesman will have a number of spare battery packs charging while drilling, so that he or she can quickly swap them.

The earliest cordless drills used 7.2V battery packs but over the years the battery voltage has increased to 18V and more, thus allowing these tools to produce as much torque as those drills connected to a main power supply. The main disadvantage of most current cordless drills is the use of nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries, which develop a "memory effect" or internal short circuits due to dendrite growth. This severely limits their usefulness and life span and in turn creates a hazardous materials disposal problem. Drill manufacturers are now producing lithium ion batteries. Makita Electric Works and Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation are two such manufacturers producing lithium ion batteries. The main advantages are lack of memory effect and very short charging time. Lithium ion batteries can provide an hour of work per twenty minutes of charging instead of vice versa. These batteries also have a constant discharge rate meaning that the power output remains constant until the battery is depleted, something that nickel-cadmium batteries lacks. This constant discharge rate makes cordless drills much more versatile. Lithium-ion batteries also hold a charge for a significantly longer time than nickel-cadmium batteries, about 2 years if not used, vs. around 4 months for a nickel-cadmium battery.

Cordless drills will increase in their popularity as science overcomes its' limitations and as power tools become increasingly powerful.
