Volt Cordless Drill

I need a 8.4 volt battery and charger for a black & decker cat# 9052kc type 1 cordless drill?

You are probably going to discover (as I did) that it is just about cheaper to buy a new outfit than buy replacement batteries. I had a Craftsman 12.4v with 2 batteries. I found out that the batteries were special order and they had a brand new 16v system on sale for about $10.00 more than the 2 batteries would have cost me.

Choosing the Best Cordless Drills

Cordless drills are portable tools, which can help quickly to do the drilling tasks. These tools use lithium ion rechargeable batteries that are best when doing offsite work without electricity. These cordless drills offer the power needed to do tasks, even the most difficult ones.

Cordless drills are one of the most common handyman tools that feature portability compared to wired electric drills. Most of the cordless drills nowadays use lithium ion rechargeable batteries.

It is important that comparison tests and assessment be performed before purchasing the power tool you needed. It should focus on the balance of use and functionality and its easy usage. It is also a must to know the specific function we require for our tools that will help us in deciding the right tool to purchase.

In most cases, we consider buying the biggest and most powerful tool that we can buy, but this is not applicable for portable power tools. They can perform as well as bigger tools. There are less expensive cordless drills which offer more features compared to larger power tools.

Here is a quick guide on different cordless drill types and uses:

•Cordless drill/drivers: These are the most common type of cordless tools. They are capable of drilling holes and can also function as screwdrivers. They come with adjustable clutches that reduces the torque power applied to a screw. These cordless drills are ideal for home use with their multi-function capability.

•Cordless hammer drill/drivers: These are types of cordless tools that are capable of drilling bricks and cements. These tools are heavier but have the power to penetrate hard objects. These tools come with special designed clutches that function similarly with a jackhammer while spinning.

•Cordless impact drivers: These power tools are ideal for driving large screws commonly used for buildings. These are capable of sensing resistance and they automatically increase the torque power so as to prevent the bit slipping out of the screw head.

•Cordless screwdrivers: These tools are smaller and lighter compared to the other cordless tools. With their size, they are sometimes called palm drivers. They are ideal in making picture frames, shelves, and furniture assembly.

In choosing the best cordless drills, it is a must to look into the features that these tools can offer. Here are some important cordless drill features that we should take into consideration when choosing the one for our use.

•14.4 volt to 18-volt cordless drills: A higher voltage is best for more power and longer usability. A 12-volt cordless drill is quite enough but if you are planning to add a circular saw that uses the same battery, it is best to choose a higher voltage. This would be a good investment since you can switch batteries with your other cordless tools. A 36-volt lithium-ion tool is best for full time use in construction sites while a lower voltage is convenient enough for your household jobs.

•Choose a fast charger. A fast charger is best in most situations. New models of cordless drills come with a charger with 30 minute or even as fast as 15 minute charging time. It is best to choose a cordless tool that comes with a smart charger. These chargers are capable of automatically turning off when it detects that the battery is fully charged, which prevents overheating and avoids damage to the batteries.

•Lithium-ion batteries: Choose a cordless tool with lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are expensive but they have longer lifespan compared to NiCad batteries. In addition, they provide three times running time compared to their predecessors.

•Torque power: A general rule applies that the higher the voltage, the higher is the torque. Remember a powerful torque can do the job quickly and efficiently.

•Pressure-sensitive trigger: This is a very convenient feature, which is used to decrease the speed of the torque as the screw head reaches the wood and prevents stripping or breaking it.

•One-sleeve keyless chucks: This feature allows an easier way of tightening the bits in place even with one hand. It is important that the chuck should be able to grasp the bits firmly and prevent slips.
It is best to choose your power tool with careful assessment based on the most essential features and vital details of the said tool.

There has never been a better time to get started in the woodworking hobby. Information is everywhere with woodworking how to books and magazines at every bookstore. Add the Internet into all of this and you have a lot of choices to learn from.

One thing that trips up people just starting in the woodworking hobby is woodworking and tools. Beginners never know what they need. Some people go overboard and buy everything in site while others make do with what they have around the house.

No matter what your first project will be there are some general woodworking tools you cannot do without. You don't need the latest and greatest tools when you are starting out. It is not practical to go out and buy two thousand dollars worth of power tools to build a birdhouse. Here are a few tools you will need for almost any project you can dream up.

A good workbench

While a workbench cannot be classified as a tool it is hard to get much done without one. It does not matter whether you build it yourself or buy it ready to go the needs are the same. Your workbench needs to be heavy and stable so you can pound away on your project if you choose to. Some benches come with goodies such as a vise or tool tray. These extras are nice but you can do without them.

A saw or two

No matter what type of woodworking you are doing you will have to cut wood to the correct length. Don't skimp when you make this purchase. A high quality handsaw will do the trick when you are getting started. There are many different saws out there. Look for a good blade and a comfortable handle. Start out with a backsaw for fine work and a rip saw for general cutting.

Drill

The ability to drill holes in your woodworking is essential. This handy tool will do double duty as a sander or electric screwdriver if needed. The cordless drill is truly a fantastic invention. You can take it wherever you go. I do not know how to get along without this device.

Drill bits

It is hard to drill holes without a bit to go with your drill. Get the best you can afford. The better ones work better and will last longer.

Sander

Sanding is a job most people do not like to do. An electric sander makes this job much more tolerable. There are many variations on this tool but a good finish sander will make your projects shine.

Measuring device

You cannot build much without some way to measure your wood. This is the most important tool you can own, you can saw all day long but if the pieces are not the right size it matters little. Get a high quality ruler and your projects will thank you many times over.

Safety Devices

Woodworking and tools can be dangerous. Always use the proper caution and wear safety glasses. The most important safety device you have is common sense.

There are many more general woodworking tools available that you will need as your woodworking journey continues but these should get you started. Add as you go and try not to buy tools that will not help get the project you are working on done.

Cordless Drill

Milwaukee cordless drill grip has dissolved to mush, any idea why?

My Milwaukee cordless drill has (had) a rubber coating on the grip. Over time (~8 yrs) this rubber has deteriorated totally, turning to sticky, gummy mush. I had to scrape it all off, otherwise it would turn my hands black every time I use it. The drill hasn't had a hard life, usually kept in its carrying case in my garage. Has anybody else experienced this? I know a lot of tools have this type of grip so it must work pretty well. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Chris

you might have came in contact with a desolving agent like gasoline, paint thinner, oil, etc.

Cordless Drill Batteries and Your Drill

When looking for the perfect cordless drill you need to be very careful that to look at every problem before purchasing.  You will also want to look at which cordless drill batteries will last the longest.  For a long time, professionals would not touch a cordless drill.  Most professional did not enjoy starting jobs and having their drills stop in the middle of the job.  Also, the burn out rate for these batteries was very high.  A professional could go through 1 or 2 batteries every other month.  As a result, professional craftsman would opt to have wired drills that one had a longer life and two held up to the rigors of the job.  What made it worse was the fact that the batteries cost so much compared to just getting a new drill.  With cost so high, a new market was born for refurbished cordless drill batteries.

Cordless drill batteries have gotten better.  Now, even the cheapest batteries tend to last months or even years.  But the merchants had to do a lot to get them to this point.  That work has started paying off.  Now, craftsmen are tending to pick cordless drills over wired drills.  Thus, giving them more freedom to not have to worry if a work site has the electricity needed to use their drills.

Cordless drills have also taken on the Lithium-Ion battery technology.  Lithium-Ion are a type of battery
composed of Lithium, the lightest metal and the metal that has the highest electrochemical potential. Lithium, however, is an unstable metal, so Lithium-Ion batteries are made from Lithium ions from chemicals. Because of its lightness and high energy density, Lithium-Ion batteries are ideal for portable devices, such as notebook computers. In addition, Lithium-Ion batteries have no memory effect and do not use poisonous metals, such as lead, mercury or cadmium.  The only disadvantage to Lithium-Ion batteries is that they are currently more expensive than NiCad and NiMH battery packs.

That being said, manufacturers are also equipping drills with the NiCad and NiMH battery packs.  NiCad battery are a rechargeable battery with a nickel cathode and a cadmium anode.  They are often used in emergency systems because of its low discharge rate when not in use.  NiCad batteries are great for on the job recharging.  If done right, charging a NiCad battery could take as little as 4 hours.

Cordless drill batteries are also evolving.  I am sure manufactures will even cut down the recharge rate to 2 hour or below.  Some day, I wish.

Power tools are essential for those jobs, which require more intense workmanship that ordinary tools cannot handle. A power tool is basically a tool, which is powered by an electric motor or alternatively a compressed air motor or petrol driven motor. They are typically used in the construction industry but are also used around the house to complete those otherwise hard to do jobs. Power tools are used for cutting, drilling, shaping, grinding, painting, sanding and polishing. Machine tools are a form of power tools used in metal work. It is not uncommon for the same power tool to be used both in wood and metal work. Go to Industrial tools for more information.

The first used power tool was the lathe. Power tools were initially developed during the time of the industrial revolution. When factories began to use power tools to drive belts from overhead shafts. The main power source was a water wheel or later a steam engine. These tools were stationary until the introduction of the electric motor in the 1880s, which made the self powered stationary and portable tools we know today possible. The electric motor has remained the preferred source by which stationary power tools are driven. These tools use a cord but what has become increasingly popular for portable power tools is the battery. However batteries still have limitations because of they run out and lack sustaining power. Cost of buying and maintaining the use of batteries keep the cordless versions in lower demand on the market. Nailers and paint sprayers more frequently use air pressure, while chain saws, weed eaters and lawn motors have a preference for petrol driven motors.

One of the most popular power tools is the cordless drill, which is a type of electric drill but instead of being connected to a wall socket uses rechargeable batteries. Typically cordless drills come in the hammer drill configuration and mostly have a clutch setting, which allows them to be used for driving screws. In order to continue working without much interruption the tradesman will have a number of spare battery packs charging while drilling, so that he or she can quickly swap them. Refer to Power tools for more information.

The earliest cordless drills used 7.2V battery packs but over the years the battery voltage has increased to 18V and more, thus allowing these tools to produce as much torque as those drills connected to a main power supply. The main disadvantage of most current cordless drills is the use of nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries, which develop a "memory effect" or internal short circuits due to dendrite growth. This severely limits their usefulness and life span and in turn creates a hazardous materials disposal problem. Drill manufacturers are now producing lithium ion batteries. Makita Electric Works and Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation are two such manufacturers producing lithium ion batteries. The main advantages are lack of memory effect and very short charging time. Lithium ion batteries can provide an hour of work per twenty minutes of charging instead of vice versa. These batteries also have a constant discharge rate meaning that the power output remains constant until the battery is depleted, something that nickel-cadmium batteries lacks. This constant discharge rate makes cordless drills much more versatile. Lithium-ion batteries also hold a charge for a significantly longer time than nickel-cadmium batteries, about 2 years if not used, vs. around 4 months for a nickel-cadmium battery.

Cordless drills will increase in their popularity as science overcomes its' limitations and as power tools become increasingly powerful. Visit tools for more information.

Cordless Drill Buyers Guide

A cordless drill is indispensable for construction professionals on the go and a quintessential tool for general use around the home. Most cordless drills on the market today double as screwdrivers, making them convenient and versatile for a wide range of basic household jobs.

A key consideration when shopping for a cordless drill is the way you intend to use it. Here we examine a few factors to keep in mind as you select the right cordless drill for your needs.

Voltage Voltage is the main indicator of the power of a particular cordless drill. The higher the voltage of the drill, the more demanding job it can tackle. While it can be tempting to purchase the most powerful drill, higher voltage typically equates to heavier weight and higher cost. In deciding what level of power will meet your needs, bear in mind the types of jobs you want to tackle. Generally, 12V and 18V models are sufficient for light use around the house.

Backup Battery Some drills come equipped with a second battery, which allows you to work continuously because you can charge one battery while using the other. If you intend to use your drill for larger projects without delay, you may want to purchase a drill that comes with an extra battery or buy an additional battery separately. The investment will be worthwhile the first time the battery in your drill runs down mid-use.

Speed (RPMs) The speed of a drill is measured in rotations per minute, or RPMs. The most basic drills operate at a fixed speed, though most drills have variable speeds so you can make adjustments depending on the type of material you are drilling. In general, soft materials need to be drilled at lower speeds while harder materials require higher speeds. Variable speed capability makes a drill more versatile, an important consideration if you are looking for a single tool that can accommodate a range of projects.

Chuck Size The chuck size on a cordless drill determines what size bits you can be used with it. The most common size is a 3/8" chuck, which should be sufficient for most general household use. Professionals or anyone who will be undertaking heavier duty jobs may consider a drill with a larger chuck size.

Festool, Bosch, Makita and Milwaukee cordless tool manufacturers are well-known providers of quality cordless drill drivers.
