A variety of woodworking machinery and tools is needed for both home and professional workshops. Several companies make quality woodworking machinery, including Craftsman, Rockwell, Rigid and Milwaukee.

Craftsman tools and machinery are sold in Sears stores through the country as well as on Sears' website. Craftsman has maintained a good reputation among experienced professionals and those new to woodworking. The company stands behind their tools, which come with a lifetime warranty. If a tool is defective, simply return it to a Sears store for replacement. Table saws and miter saws are two of the quality tools made by Craftsman. The table saws come in ten and twelve inch models and most have three horsepower motors. The company's portable models are convenient for carrying to a job site and can be stored in a shed or closet when not in use. Craftsman also makes great sliding compound miter saws in both ten and twelve inch sizes. These miter saws have LaserTrac, a great feature which creates a laser line for increased accuracy when cutting. The blade's dual bevel style allows the saws to tilt to either side for easier operation and beveled edges.

Rockwell is another popular company. Rockwell tools are not only superior quality but also come with a good warranty. Rockwell makes a wide variety of tools that, with regular maintenance and good cleaning, can last for many years. Rockwell saws are available in nine through twelve inch models. They are made from a strong cast iron and are very durable. Older, vintage Rockwell saws are often found to still be in good condition.

Rigid offers a complete line of power tools to make any home workshop complete. Its contractor style table saws are made with cast iron and included such features as extension rails and micro-adjusted fence dials. Other tools in Rigid's line of power tools include miter saws, lathes and drill press equipment all of which are also quality tools. In addition, Rigid is always trying to upgrade its tools to a greater quality and convenience. New features are being added to many of its woodworking tools as the new technology is developed. For example, one feature is an exact line laser on its miter saws to further improve accuracy in cutting.

Finally, Milwaukee tools are another great selection of tools for any workshop. Milwaukee routers come with either two or three horsepower motors and the motor contamination shield protects it from damage caused by debris. Other features available include variable speeds, twin handles, a 36 position dial and depth adjustment.

Greg Hansward usually edits short articles on stories about power tools and hand tools. His articles on woodworking machinery are found on http://www.insidewoodworking.com/machinery/index.html .

They have a great contractor style saw that is made from cast iron and has rails that extend, as well as a micro adjusted fence dial. They also make really durable and rugged miter saws, lathes, and drip press machinery.

This brand has also being trying to improve their technology and add more features to make better products. For instance new features are being put on their whole line of woodworking tools. They also have developed a laser system for miter saws to make them even more accurate.

Task Force Compound Miter Saw with Laser?

I bought a floor model and need to change the blade; I also can't find the laser.I couldn't locate a Task Force company website to get a user manual. Any serious advice will be appreciated:)

For one thing, even as a low end tool MFG. Task Force brand is sold at HD.

The blade change can be as easy as the proper wrench, and a chunk of 2x4 for the blade to bite while you loosen, then change and retighten.

No offense to you, but I find laser tool accesories to be rather useless, often, and the nature of the tool, doesn't need laser sighting anyway. You can certainly check angles with a framing square and make sure the table is well secured, or that the degree guide that relocates the saw itself is able to be secured in a stable fashion.

Even if you found the laser, and it functioned, you might have to re-calibrate it often.

More Security With A Miter Saw Stand

In the past, a miter saw held a blade that was attached to a box and perfectly angled to create a ninety and forty-five degree angle with just a simple adjustment. This manual tool could easily cut through crown, frame or chair moldings as well as cuts to exterior corners on baseboard moldings. This could be why so many people still use this manual saw and find it to be perfectly suitable for their work.

Today, it seems to all come down to power, even with basic tools. The greatest advantage of a power saw is the clean cut it provides. Regardless of the skill of the craftsman, a hand saw leaves the cut wood somewhat more ragged than a power saw. With power tools becoming more popular, there is not much of a difference in price between a manual miter saw and a basic power miter saw.

For fancier versions of the miter saw, though, you will need power. Generally, with a miter saw or radial saw users can adjust the degree of the cut relative to the fence guiding the wood. There are standard stops with the most common settings being fifteen, thirty, forty-five and ninety degrees. When the wood is securely anchored against the fence, possibly using a miter saw stand, a forty-five degree cut will match perfectly to a corresponding forty-five degree cut in the opposite direction. This allows for a perfect mitered corner for frames or window moldings.

Beyond frames and crown molding, the new compound miter saw makes table tops, counters and other furniture safer and even more appealing. A compound cut gives counters and table tops a unique beveled edge that rounds the sharp corners. This makes them a little safer and less likely to scratch or snag a passerby. The gradual angles of the cut shape the edge while some sanding will smoother edges to perfection.

Radial arm saws can create a similar effect as the compound cut. It simply requires a couple passes of the blade at different angles. The DeWalt radial arm saw is a good choice in models, but stopped production in the United States in 1985. However, this tool can still be found in many workshops today throughout the country.

A panel saw is used during the first step in projects such as cabinetry. The panel saw is designed to cut the face and sides of the cabinet by cutting large panels of plywood into rectangles. The miter saw would then be used to frame and face the front of the cabinet door or draw to give the beveled edges and decorative front.

As you can see, a number of saws are part of a complete workshop. If you must substitute a miter saw for another saw, the radial saw would be a good choice.

A Miter Saw Stand Is Important In The Workshop

A miter saw is an essential tool if you are planning on cutting a miter edge on trim or baseboards. A basic miter saw will cut only or horizontal angles, but a compound miter saw will cut beveled edges. If you do a lot of this kind of work, you may want to invest in special features such as a slide that will allow the blade to move forward in order to cut a large piece.

A compound miter can cut straight or on a horizontal angle, but because of the tilting motor, it can also cut a bevel. A plain miter will not be able to do this. You use a miter saw by sitting it on a table and the spinning saw is pushed into the wood to make the cut. Miter saws are lightweight, durable and portable. They are easily carried from one job site to another.

There is an even more complex miter saw which is called a double bevel saw or a dual compound saw. They are even more versatile than the compound miter since they can tilt in either direction to make beveled edges.

A sliding compound miter saw works like a compound miter, but can also be pulled forward as the wood is cut, so that long pieces of wood can be mitered.

Put all of these features together, and you get the dual compound sliding saw. These saws can cut miters or bevels, since they tilt in either direction and they also have the slide feature so that large pieces of wood can be cut. Even though they have all of these features, they are portable and can go from job to job just like the others.

The most versatile saw of all if the radial arm saw. Most people consider them the most desired piece of equipment in a workshop. This saw allows you to do many different kinds of cuts such as dado work, ripping stock and crosscutting. But they alto tilt for cutting a miter edge or a beveled edge and they can be used for routing and drilling.

In deciding the blade size for a saw, you have to go by the maximum size of the wood you are working with. Make sure the saw has sufficient cross cutting ability for the size of the piece of wood. The best radial arm saw is the De Walt. It is easy to use, while still being reliable and durable. A De Walt radial saw will meet most woodworkers needs since it is adjustable to be able to work on many kinds of projects or sizes of wood.

A panel saw is used to cut large sheets of lumber, and so is usually found in lumber yards. Plywood, paneling or particleboard is usually cut by a panel saw into either 4X8 foot sheets or 4X12 foot sheets. A stationary model would be used in a lumber yard. Panel saws are also used by contractors for new homes or large home improvement projects, but they prefer a portable model that can be moved to different sites.

Compound Miter Saw

Merely because you love woodwork, it does not mean your workmanship is not a spare-time activity

A spare-time activity must be vested on. You would not have a difficult time doing so, as the affair is there in the first place. Hence, motivation and drive are apparently inherent as well.

Newcomers to woodworking often wonder what the necessary tools in starting up a workshop are. The solution varies from one woodworker to the next, because there's a tenacious list of required tools in the beginning. Plus, it depends upon the project.

For a good example, you travel to your nearest tool store to purchase a power tool. At present there's a diversity of manufacturers and naturally, prices differ as well. Like in any merchandise, the more expensive, and so the better the quality. Finer quality tools in woodwork have better design features and functions, in addition to a high tolerance in manufacturing, they in addition perform better.

Purchase the finest tool that you are able to afford. Start a budget on how much you're willing to spend on a specific tool. This is significant since you'll be using your tools on a frequent basis.

And if you're just starting out and you are able to only spend limited cash to establish your woodworking workshop, do not try for the absolute best then. You will be able to fall back on the ones that are relied on by most woodworkers that come in a reasonable price.

There are exclusions to the universal principle noted above. If woodworking is simply a spare-time activity you enjoy during the weekend, then you don't have to get the top-of-the-notch tools.

The key is acquiring a tool that's within your budget. But as often as possible, veer away from the cheapest tools and materials. They being cheap already tells something - these aren’t worth purchasing.

Here are the most common tools a woodworking newbie must have in his shop.

1. Electric Drill and Drill Bits - Electric drills are by far the first power tool purchased, they have so many uses besides drilling holes, there are attachments to turn them into paint mixers, sanders, screwdrivers, saws, grinders, lathes, the list goes on.

2. Electric Circular Saw - These can be very handy when cutting your wood pieces.  No need to break the bank on this, however.  Find one that’s easy for you to use and reliable.

3. Finishing Sander

These are used for sanding and finishing your projects. It can also be employed to smooth wood to clear out the edges.

4. Jig Saw - While not completely necessary, a good jig saw can help make your woodworking projects easier.  They can add some eye-catching detail to a piece and make cutting wood easier as well.

5. Table Saw

Comparable to the drill, this is an additional tool that you must own and invest in. Though there are a few cheap table saws simply they're not as powerful as the high-ticket ones. They do not work equally well as you desire too. Acquire a table saw with a strong motor, one that's powerful enough that it can be used time and time again. If not, the blade will drag during the course of you ripping wood. It may even burn a few of your precious designs and no woodworker would desire that. Again there are loads of plans for jigs for this work horse.

6. Router - Routers have become one of the most used tools in a workshop, possibly even more popular than a table saw. A well equipped shop will have both a plunge base and a fixed base router; it is now possible to get a combination kit where one machine has both bases.

7. Compound Miter Saw

These are portable and used to cut miters, long wood stock and moldings. A great deal easier to handle than the table saw. You will be able to find plans on the internet for a neat table for this tool.

8. Drill Press

This tool is a workhorse in the shop it can be use for drilling holes, sanding with a sanding drum attachment.

9. Biscuit Joiner

Nifty tool for joining pieces of wood together. The tool cuts pocket-sized slots in every side of the join. The biscuit is inserted and glued in between, binding the parts altogether.

10. Basic Hand Tools

Claw hammers are the most common types of hammers used for woodworking and general repairs around the home.

Screwdrivers are needed for almost every woodworking project.  Make sure you have various sizes of both Phillips head and flat head.

Wood chisels range in size from 1/4" to 2" wide in 1/8" graduations. They are available with wooden or plastic handles.

Tape measures come in a variety of widths and lengths. I would not recommend anything less than 3/4" wide for a tape over 6 feet long as they can not be extended out and remain rigid.

Clamps - Any project that is glued requires clamping to insure that the parts are bonded firmly in exactly the right position.

Finally, keep a wet / dry shop vacuum nearby so that you can quickly clean up wood shavings and dust. Keeping dust and wood particles to a minimum will reduce the risk of wood shop fires and help you breathe easier, too.

As a woodworking newcomer, you must have the best tools you are able to afford. However that also depends upon the projects that you plan on making. Prior to traveling to your closest home building provider to purchase your tools, think over what precisely you'll be constructing.

Overview of Miter Saws - Ryobi, Hitachi, Bosch, Makita, Ridgid

Workshops everywhere use the exceptionally handy miter saw. It is thought of as the best tool when you require precise cross cutting and miters in the project at hand.  Fundamentally, there are two sorts of miter saws from which you can choose. The manual miter saw is a more traditional choice, while the motorized version is a more recent invention. In these saws portability and small size come at a moderate cost. You may be having trouble finding just the right saw for your purposes; the following miter saw descriptions will help you find the right brand of saw to function best in your work area.
