Woodworking has been around since the beginning of time, therefore the need for woodworking tools is apparent. Like technology, woodworking tools has evolved into what we know it as now. From wood adhesives to wood drills to wood saws, woodworking tools are numerous and come in every way shape and form. Because there is so much one can do with a piece of wood, countless woodworking tools have been created.

You don’t have to be a carpenter to enjoy working with wood. From building a little birdhouse for a school project to fixing things around the house, woodworking tools are needed by everyone of every age. The most basic woodworking tool would be the everyday handsaw. But most woodworking projects require more than just a handsaw. One could break down woodworking tools into two categories. The first category would be the hand tools. For example: saws, chisels, files, hammer, and the list goes on and on. The second category would be power tools. Anything from a power drill, sanders, to an old fashioned table saw; they are all considered power tools. For most woodworking projects, both forms of tools are usually used. We also can’t leave out wood stainers and wood adhesives as woodworking tools. These things’ are just as important as any hand tool or power tool. The basic need for any of these tools is felt by everyone in everyday life.

We may not know it but, people of everyday life have used a woodworking tool at least once in there lifetime. May it be a hammer or saw, we’ve used it once. It may possibly be the oldest form of labor we know since it has been around sine the beginning of man. As long as there is trees and wood in the world, woodworking tools will continue to be used.

There has never been a better time to get started in the woodworking hobby. Information is everywhere with woodworking how to books and magazines at every bookstore. Add the Internet into all of this and you have a lot of choices to learn from.

One thing that trips up people just starting in the woodworking hobby is woodworking and tools. Beginners never know what they need. Some people go overboard and buy everything in site while others make do with what they have around the house.

No matter what your first project will be there are some general woodworking tools you cannot do without. You don't need the latest and greatest tools when you are starting out. It is not practical to go out and buy two thousand dollars worth of power tools to build a birdhouse. Here are a few tools you will need for almost any project you can dream up.

A good workbench

While a workbench cannot be classified as a tool it is hard to get much done without one. It does not matter whether you build it yourself or buy it ready to go the needs are the same. Your workbench needs to be heavy and stable so you can pound away on your project if you choose to. Some benches come with goodies such as a vise or tool tray. These extras are nice but you can do without them.

A saw or two

No matter what type of woodworking you are doing you will have to cut wood to the correct length. Don't skimp when you make this purchase. A high quality handsaw will do the trick when you are getting started. There are many different saws out there. Look for a good blade and a comfortable handle. Start out with a backsaw for fine work and a rip saw for general cutting.

Drill

The ability to drill holes in your woodworking is essential. This handy tool will do double duty as a sander or electric screwdriver if needed. The cordless drill is truly a fantastic invention. You can take it wherever you go. I do not know how to get along without this device.

Drill bits

It is hard to drill holes without a bit to go with your drill. Get the best you can afford. The better ones work better and will last longer.

Sander

Sanding is a job most people do not like to do. An electric sander makes this job much more tolerable. There are many variations on this tool but a good finish sander will make your projects shine.

Measuring device

You cannot build much without some way to measure your wood. This is the most important tool you can own, you can saw all day long but if the pieces are not the right size it matters little. Get a high quality ruler and your projects will thank you many times over.

Safety Devices

Woodworking and tools can be dangerous. Always use the proper caution and wear safety glasses. The most important safety device you have is common sense.

There are many more general woodworking tools available that you will need as your woodworking journey continues but these should get you started. Add as you go and try not to buy tools that will not help get the project you are working on done.

Working with one's own hands can be a very powerful form of self expression. There is any number of fantastic ways to create with the use of bare hands, woodworking being one of them. Without it, the wonderful architectural structures and houses many of us live in simply would not exist. Everyone has to get started somewhere. Beginners interested in woodworking may find it's much easier to get into than they first thought.

Some people prefer to approach a new skill by learning from a professional. If a reliable instructor helps you to feel more self assured in your newfound knowledge, seek out a woodworking class that you can join. Locate a community based program or if all else fails, consult your local community college for classes designed to enter students into further education. Woodworking doesn't have to be a full blown career if all you seek is a hobby. Training only needs to go as far as you are comfortable taking it.

It's common for most people to find that they are incredibly caught up with work and family which leaves little opportunity for the pursuit of a hobby. If this sounds like something you face, try looking online for woodworking instruction. Online programs have become a common option for learning new things and attending classes from the comfort of your own home. At the very least there is an endless wealth of information on every aspect of woodworking. There is nothing to hold you back when you know where the answers are found.

The first step in woodworking of any kind is to build something. Don't feel pressured to complete an advanced project that requires extensive planning and preparation. Start small with things that are easy and allow for room to grow. Once you get started the possibilities seem to grow beyond your imagination. Embrace the creative side of you that is drawn to this type of craft.

A mailbox is a relatively easy project that is perfect for testing your skill. Be daring and get creative. Make it original by adding decorative accents or painting it in a fun colour. Birdhouses and doghouses are incredibly useful items that will be appreciated by those who use them, especially in the winter season. Many woodworkers actually start their own part time businesses designing and selling these types of products. The point of a hobby is not to make money, however, if you should be able to then it certainly is a testament to your ability.

Woodworking begins with the proper tools. It's not enough to find the cheapest material and expect it to be stable and reliable. Good wood will be much sturdier and last longer while resisting damage from time and weather. Tools that are properly made will serve you more efficiently than the cheapest ones available. Most hobbies involve the use of some kind of tool or instrument. If that piece is not adequate, the outcome of your creation will not be up to standard. Cover all of the bases and woodworking will be a success regardless of your skill level.
