how to I determine the compression of a steel rod before it bends?
I need to determine if a high speed steel rod at .390 dia will withstand 15000 lbs of load with 5.5 unsupported lenght is there a way to calculate this I have a rule of thumb of 10 to 12 dia unsupported but what is the calculation to arrive at this
The first thing to do is to calculate the axial stress in the bar to ensure that the yield and ultimate strength are not exceeded. Then, using solve for the buckling load assuming it's an Euler column with the appropriate end conditions. Check out the attached site:

Tube mill entry machines improve steel processing
