Cordless Hammer Drill
Are dewalt drills as good as they they say? Esp' the cordless ones?
Thinking about buying a cordless hammer drill. I need one that will last and have good battery life. Dewalt seem very expensive, are they worth the money. The DC988 is advertised alot. Looking for at least a 14.4v or 18v model. Any experience or comments welcome.
Dewalt drills are a very good tool. Things some people dont know is that there are 2 levels of Dewalt tools- compact and XRP. XRP are the ones a contractor will use and are a good tool for the regular DIY's to purchase. Personally I own a Dewalt drill 14.4 and it has served me well, but if I was to go and get a new drill then I would be buying a Ridgid tool. Ridgid tools have move power(torque) in the same class for less but sometimes they have more power that in other classes ie a Ridgid 12v 3/8" chuck has a torque rating of 300 in/lbs of torque while the dewalt compact 18V has 300 in/lbs of torque. Now if your me I would much rather handle a 12v than a clunky 18v. Plus the Ridgid will and have a lifetime warenty batteries inc. while the Dewalt will have a 1yr parts and labour and 2yrs on the batteries. another expamle is the Dewalt inpact driver 18v has 1170 in/lbs of torque where the Ridgid 14.4 has 1400 in/lbs and their 18V has 1450 in/lbs all their tools will sell for less $$. Dont get me wrong Dewalt makes a good tool but there are better tools out there. I just like the thought of never having the buy another drill unless I need an extra one by going with Ridgid. Plus the wife will love the idea too, one less tool to buy again= more $$ that she can spend..ha ha j/k any lady DIY's
Bosch 36v Litheon Brute Tough ½" Hammer Drill/Driver Model 18636-02
What can you say about this drill other than it lives up to the Brute Tough name. The Bosch18636-02 drill delivers unbelievable torque for even the toughest jobs. It boasts 600 in. lbs of torque while only weighing in at just over seven pounds. The power to weight ratio rivals many corded tools.
This tool works great for using large bits that need the extra torque that most drills just can't provide. Self feed and paddle bits are no match for this drill. I have friends that use it to drive their ice auger while going out ice fishing with the guys. It also works well as a hammer drill for drilling holes for tapcons. The drill has two speeds; low range is 0-500 rpm, high range is 0-1500 rpm. The hammer action is 18000 bpm. Another great feature on this drill is the 36v fat pack battery that will outlast just about any battery on the market.
This tool is built construction site tough. From the carbide tooth single ring keyless chuck to the fifteen position clutch this tool has the features and durability to stand out from the crowd. It has a durashield housing that was tested to withstand repeated one story drops. It also has a unibody powertrain with metal gears so that when the tool is dropped the gears won't strip out the next time you use it. Bosch is so confident in the durability of their tool that they offer an exclusive ProVantage three year protection plan if you register it.
The next time you are considering a cordless drill, consider the Bosch 36v Brute Tough model 18636-2. It has the power, features and durability to be the top performing tool in your tool arsenal. Try one out today!
