Using a circular saw to rough cut granite?
I'm installing a new cook top that requires that I cut an additional 1" opening in my granite. Can I use a circular saw with a diamond blade to cut it? The granite is approx. 1" thick and the lengh of the cut will be approx. 36". I'm not worried about the edge looking nice as the cook top will over lap the edge by 1/2" or so. Thanks!
I purchased a wet or dry diamond blade. I was planning to use it dry to minimize the mess and complication. Is that ok? It says it's good for granite on the package.
You have the right idea ,except using water will minimize the mess. You would be surprised how much airborne dust is created cutting dry. Make sure your saw is well grounded, and plugged into a GFCI outlet. It doesn't take much water to minimize the dust.

Safety Tips for Operating a Portable Circular Saw
Circular saws are versatile tools that are relatively easy to operate and so convenient that we sometimes forget the risk they pose if not operated with caution. Popular Mechanics includes circular saws in its list of the 5 most dangerous tools for their role in tool related injuries. Even those who are experienced and comfortable using circular saws must use extreme caution each time they operate one. Neglecting proper safety precautions with circular saws can lead to accidents and injuries, even death.
When operating any power tool, adhering to all safety precautions provided in the user manual is recommended to prevent injury. Below are some basic but essential safety tips to keep in mind when operating a circular saw:
- Wear eye protection. Protecting your eyes from dust and debris is essential when working with a circular saw. Depending on the type of material you are cutting, a dust mask or respirator may also be advised.
- Keep the tool unplugged when not in use and when changing blades. This will prevent the tool from being turned on accidentally, which can cause injury as well as damage to the cord or blade.
- While the saw is still unplugged, check the lower blade guard. The lower blade guard is a spring loaded cover that surrounds the saw blade when not in use. It should retract smoothly and snap back over the blade when released.
- Use the recommended blade depth. While the tool is unplugged, the blade should be locked at a depth such that it extends below the surface to be cut by the amount specified by the manufacturer. The blade should just clear the bottom of the surface being cut.
- Support the surface being cut. Wood or other material being cut with a circular saw should be supported while you are making the cut. This may require two supports on each side of the cut and possibly a few clamps. Supports should be sturdy and designed to prevent the blade from being pinched as the surface separates.
The tips covered here are important for circular saw safety, but do not cover every possible scenario. Exercising extreme caution, using common sense and following all manufacturer recommendations are imperative for your safety when working with electrical power tools. The owner’s manual for your circular saw should cover specific safety rules intended for the tool you are using.
