Looking for interest for a Betta Shop?

Hubby and I are looking into starting a Ma and Pop's Betta Shop in the Fox Valley Area, Wisconsin. We were wondering what the interests of others would be. Basically is it an interest enough to start or a waste of time.

We would sell tanks, decorations, food and other things needed for the care of Bettas.

We would also offer full tank set-ups with everything included. Plus we would/can do maintenance on the tanks for a small fee.

Although Bettas are amongst the most popular fishes in the hobby, especially amongst newcomers, they are extremely inexpensive and easy to set up. I would question if there is enough money to be made strictly on Betta or even primarily on Bettas.

The money to sustain a brick & mortar LFS comes from equipment and supplies as a customer buys a fish that will hopefully live for years but the real expense comes in water medications, conditioners, food, etc. And Bettas don't demand very much of any of these consumables.

My suggestion would be to open a full-scale Aquarium Shop with a special section for Bettas to set you apart from other LFS. You can make it a higher "class" like a "Aquarium/fish Boutique" specialized in Betta accessorizing and pampering.

Tropical fish have high consumable requirements that will drive sales and Marine fish will provide the largest check out "rings" with many going over $60 per fish.

So to answer your question:

---- Online: Yes, it can make a very cool niche-site for Betta enthusiasts and can be operated from the home but you will need to research how to promote and advertise the site online, most likely using social media and such...
