Woodworking Tools Archives

When looking for high quality and reliable wood working tools, perhaps the best place to look is online. There are many reviews out there and trying and testing them all is probably beyond a single person's means, financially or time wise. This article will attempt to highlight some wood working tools that you may want to look into.

New Wood Working Tools To Look At

Probably the most useful, and maybe the most expensive, tool you need to have to be considered a truly professional woodworker is a solid table saw. The best of the bunch right now is probably the Powermatic PM2000. This table saw is the best selling item that Powermatic has in its lineup, and this is with good reason.

When you think of table saws, you generally imagine something that is big and heavy. For this, the PM2000 delivers. It is constructed of strong cast iron and all the component pieces come from either cast iron or forged steel, giving the PM2000 a rugged look and strong feel.

Powermatic did not do anything on this unit cheaply and it feels like a true working man's machine. In operation, it is incredibly stable and easily adjustable and will be able to perform any task you put in front of it.

Next up on our wood working tools to look at is the Jet 1014I Mini Lathe. This lathe keeps the solid cast iron foundation of its bigger brother, but houses it in a smaller package for easier home use. It offers an easy to use and control motor for dependable and highly adjustable speeds. Coupled with the solid base, this tool allow for great control and accuracy when working on wood. Also, the Jet has a twenty four position indexing wheel that uses a simple system. The spindle lock in well and the push pull button is located for easy use. This mini lathe is a very solid product for the serious woodworker.

Last product on our wood working tool list is the Lumber Wizard III. The Wizard is an ingenious tool that lets you search for small pieces of metal before cutting so you do not risk damaging your expensive table saw or any of your other tools. This tool takes the guesswork out of trying to find those hidden nails. This tool offers a simple to use solution for this very difficult task. Sighting and finding hidden metal within your wood is almost impossible, and if you can not detect it you risk destroying your valuable wood working tools.

If you have a chance to go to a local hardware store to examine these products, take the time and give them a look.

Deciding on a woodworking bench is an important step when crossing over from occasional DIY enthusiast to all out hobbyist. The woodworking bench says you are serious about woodworking and it also makes working on projects a lot easier when you have a designated space to work and lay out all your tools. Some people choose to make their own woodworking bench while others choose to simply buy one.

Making your own bench can be quite a feat if you are new to woodworking and although it is in theory cheaper, mistakes can be costly. Carefully evaluate your level of skill and commitment to such a project. If you are not sure that making a bench on your own is a good idea then dont. Wait until you have the right amount of knowledge before you try something like this.

Materials are Everything

When choosing your woodworking bench, you should make sure that it is made from as sturdy a wood as possible. You are going to have heavy tools on this surface and it needs to withstand the weight of your project as well. Rubber wood is a popular choice because of its sturdiness and it is also an affordable wood to use.

Some woodworking benches come with vises. This is an add on feature that is handy if you dont already have vises. If you do then opt for one without a vise but one that has enough holes dug into it to accommodate vises and other tools that you might want to have on your woodworking bench.

Look at the height of the bench; is it comfortable for you to work at? You will be standing in front of your bench for long periods of time; if it is an awkward height for you then your woodworking becomes uncomfortable and brutal on the back.

Storage space is also another issue when you are looking at a bench for your workshop. Does your woodworking bench have storage for tools? This is especially important if you dont have a big working area and need to maximize storage space.

The size of your bench is another factor to think about. You might think that the bigger the better to give you more surface area to work on. This is great if the area youre working in has ample space that will allow you to move around the woodworking bench easily. If it doesnt then down size, you need to be able to utilize the bench properly.

Finding solid woodworking clamps can be difficult, but this article is here to help. There are many woodworking clamps out there to choose from so selecting the right one is imperative. There are dozens and dozens of woodworking clamps out there, and each has its own specific purpose. This article is not going to go into the details of each and every clamp, but rather it's going to take a look at some of the major woodworking clamp manufacturers to give you an overview of what to expect.

Woodworking Clamp Manufacturers

If you are looking for a high quality, made in America, clamp then look no further than Wetzler Clamps. Wetzler has been making high quality clamps since 1928. Wetzler pioneered the Quick Action clamp design that has become the benchmark of the clamping industry. This design has been copied by almost every clamp manufacturer out there, but Wetzler is still the choice of most professionals. Each of their clamps is still machined and assembled by hand. Quality construction, outstanding customer support, and worldwide name recognition are all hallmarks of the Wetzler Clamp Company.

Another high quality clamp manufacturer is Bessey Tools. Bessey has an extensive line of clamps and tools and has been in business since 1889 when Max Bessey founded a drawn steel mill. In 1936 the company obtained a patent for an adjustable screw clamp. This was the first clamp that was offered by Bessey Tools. They then released an all-steel clamp that saved craftsmen hours of time on their current production. Bessey continues to offer high quality products and all of their woodworking clamps come highly recommended. These clamps are designed and manufactured for the serious woodworker and they can be expected to hold up to whatever job you throw at them, no matter how big or small.

These two are probably the most well recognized and highest quality woodworking clamps available. For you, the consumer, it comes down to which company you feel better with; the North American hand made Wetzler, or the high quality industry standard Bessey Tools. Each company offers high quality, dependable products that you can use for your everyday projects. Having a solid clamp is one of the most important things for the casual or serious woodworker. The only way to guarantee a solid fit and cut is through a great clamp. Without being able to hold your wood in place, the products you make will suffer. Choose either of the manufacturers with confidence.

When people think about woodworking, often times they are thinking about actual woodworking. In other words, they are thinking about taking the wood and caving it or cutting it or manipulating it in some form or fashion. However, this is only one aspect to woodworking; the other aspects deal with woodworking hardware. There are a number of varieties of woodworking hardware.

In addition, unfortunately, the definition of woodworking hardware is open to interpretation. There are a number of individuals who consider woodworking hardware to be the hardware that is placed on the piece that has been created in order to finish it. In this case, hardware would be considered to be slide handles or other forms of decorative additions.

Other Types Of Woodworking Hardware

Another types of hardware that can be found in woodworking consists of the additional support items, which are used in the creation of the particular project. For example, hardware could constitute the various types of clamps that are used to hold a piece of wood down so that it can be manipulated or the type of clamps that are used to hold two pieces of wood together that are being connected through the use of glue.

Another type of hardware could actually be the fasteners used to create a piece of furniture, for example, things like screws and pegs can also be considered hardware when it comes to woodworking. Finally, there are some individuals who consider this type of hardware for woodworking to actually be the tools used to create the woodworking piece including power tools and hand tools.

The definition of what hardware constitutes when it comes to woodworking is an interpretation that's left up to the individual. Doing an Internet search for hardware produces results in many definitions. However, it may be found that the majority of individuals consider a type of hardware because it is involved in the actual working of wood rather than being woodwork hardware.

This may constitute the actual additional support functions and hardware of the actual manipulation of the project prior to completion; in other words, a clamp's fasteners and other various forms of support. The definition of what constitutes actual hardware when working with wood is dependent on the individual in question since there seems to be no actual definition that is consistent when it comes to hardware that is used in the process of woodworking itself. Actually, it contains everything from support hardware to decorative additions.

If you have decided to take up woodworking as a hobby and intend to embark on some small projects then you may have come across the common problem of how to make things precise. Often when you are making something as simple as a cabinet, no matter the size, it is very difficult to keep things accurate so that you end up with a perfect square or rectangle.

Woodworking jigs help you to keep things in place and repeat the same measurements and dimensions in all your woodworking projects. You can make your own woodworking jigs for these purposes. Jigs allow you to do all sorts of things; with a jig you can start more difficult projects that require very thin wood as you can plane the wood yourself with the right jig. You can even use jigs to invert a belt sander and use it for things that you never dreamed of.

Making a Box Squaring Jig

Among the woodworking jigs that you can make at home is the box-squaring jig. This is a simple device that will help you to make cabinets and anything that has a square shape. Use plywood that is about three quarters of an inch thick and cut an eight or 10-inch square from this. Down the middle of the square cut a groove that is about three quarters of an inch wide and about half an inch deep. You can use a router or dado blade for this.

Cut another groove that is perpendicular to the first one so that you have a cross across your square of plywood. At the intersection of the two lines drill or cut a hole with a hole saw that is about one and a half inches to two inches in circumference. To finish off the most practical of all the woodworking jigs, put on a coat of varnish. This will help to keep glue off and the hole also helps to remove any excess glue that might result.

This is just the beginning of the woodworking jigs that you can make. The box-squaring jig is a simple one to make and a good one to have when you are just starting out with woodworking projects. Other woodworking jigs become quite complicated and are labor intensive to make. The construction of these jigs themselves can be difficult. You might want to consider buying the more complicated woodworking jigs rather than making your own.
