Palm Sander

Can using a palm sander for too long damage anything in your hands?

I am not an expert, but I do work in healthcare, just so you know. With that said, any long term exposure to vibration can cause a number of problems. The type of problems and the extent of them is directly related to the type and length of exposure. Here are some things that are related to this type of vibration exposure:
ACGIH American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists.
hand-arm vibration-induced tingling and/or numbness in the fingers, also finger
vibration blanching, increased stiffness of the finger joints, loss of manipulation skills
syndrome and loss of blood circulation which can lead to gangrene and tissue necrosis.
Long story shortened, limit vibration exposure as much as possible.

Woodwork Tools

Tools for Woodwork

Wooden tools created by our primitive ancestors were located in Lehringen. Some spears were found in Germany. Wooden weapons for hunting and flint tools for carving show that primitive people were already knowledgeable on how to create materials that would help them obtain their needs.

There are two ancient civilizations that are often mentioned when woodworking is the subject matter. These are the Egyptians and the Chinese. This is because woodworking has been shown in their ancient sketches and drawings.

Also, a vast amount of Egyptian furniture like chairs, tables, beds, stools and chests have been encased in tombs. Preservation of such materials shows that the ancient Egyptian people were inclined to use wood. Coffins that were located in the tomb were also out of wood.

Egyptians used metal for their woodwork. Copper and bronze were the main tools for woodworking. These were turned into adzes, pull saws, axes, chisels and bow drills.

Ancient Egyptians were the first civilization to do veneering. They were also the first to use varnish, therefore resulting to what is now termed as “finishes.” They used native acacias and the wood from the sycamore and tamarisk trees.

As for the Chinese, wood working was said to have started when Lu Ban and his wife Lady Yun brought plane and chalkline to China. This was during the Spring and Autumn period. From them on, Lu Ban’s teachings were said to have been recoreded in the book “Lu Band Jing” or “Manuscript of Lu Ban.”

This was written 1500 years after he died. The book is complete with elaborate descriptions of the necessary dimensions in building different kinds of furniture like tables, altars and flower pots.

In the modern times, these are the tools a woodworker must possess:

* Measuring and Marking tools
_ protractor, tape measures, rules
- scratch awls, marking knives, marking gauges
- plane gauges in order to figure out how flat the surface it
- hygrometers in order to figure out how much water the wood has
- levels
- winding sticks
- combination squares, try squares, straightedges

* Cutting tools
- hands saws like the rip saw, cross cut saw, keyhole saw, bow saw, coping saw, tenon saw, gent’s saw and dowtail saw
- power saws like the chainsaw, radial arm saw, miter saw, band saw, scroll saw, hole saw, table saw and circular saw.

* Shaping tools
- hand planes like the smoothing plane, shoulder plane, spear plane, rabbet plane, scrub plane, block plane and jointer plane.
- jointer and thickness planer
- router
- rotary tools
- gouge and chisel
- drill press and chisel mortiser
- knifer
- rasp
- lathe
- other hand shaping tools like the adze, axe, froe, drawknife and spokeshave

* Assembly tools
- screwdriver
- mallet and hammer
- hand or power drills
- clamps like the F-clamp, G-clamp, C-clamp, miter clamp, bar clamp, band clamp and sash clamp

* Finishing tools
- sandpaper that can be used alone. It can be used with power sanders like belt sander, palm sander, orbit sander, disc sander or sanding blocks
- steel wool or bronze wool for polishing and applying stain
- file
- scraper
- spray guns used to apply lacquer
- brushes for applying varnish

* Accessory tools and furniture
- workbench or the bench or table where one sits or stands. This is where the woodworking process takes place
Kinds of workbench
1. dog hole or a round or square hole that allows clamping and holding devices to be attached
2. bench dog or a peg that is inserted into a dog hole that lets in the clamp pressure
3. hold fast or the rod that is bent when put into the dog hole. It is used to put boards into position
4. vise or a clamping apparatus that holds wood in various positions during woodworking
5. bench hook that is laid against the wood that can be pushed during woodworking.
- Sawhorse is the four legged stand that often comes in pairs. It supports long boards, sheets and panels.

Carving Pumpkins: Jack-o-lanterns of the Twenty-first Century

Every year at Halloween, jack-o-lanterns are everywhere. On doorsteps, on window sills, hanging as paper on walls, even as plastic candy collectors for trick-or-treaters. You can easily find them in department stores, restaurants and even along public streets. They are an absolute part of Halloween.

Many things have changed over the hundreds of years since jack-o-lanterns were first brought to America. The pumpkin is no longer always a real pumpkin. As a matter of fact, artificial jack-o-lanterns are much more common these days than real ones, and it's been that way for many years. As usual in our increasingly sedentary lifestyle, we'd rather buy it than make it. But there are those out there who wouldn't have it any other way. It's got to be a real pumpkin or nothing at all.

So let's make a jack-o-lantern from the twenty-first century. Not the traditional method where all you use are your hands, a couple of knives and maybe a drawing tool. This is the jack-o-lantern that could look like a haunted house, a grave yard, a witch on a broomstick or bats flying through the air, almost any image that can be carved onto the face of a pumpkin.

You'll need to gather a few things: the right kind of pumpkin, the stenciled image you want and a handful of simple tools. Once you've completely finished carving the jack-o-lantern, all you'll need is the right lighting.

The Right Kind of Pumpkin. To help get a pumpkin of the right size and shape, you should already know what you want the carving to look like when you're done. Medium sized pumpkins are the most popular for jack-o-lanterns. It may be short and squat or tall and narrow, depending on the image to carve. Whichever you decide, make sure that it has a uniform color throughout. The bottom of the pumpkin should be flattened so that it'll stand upright.

Inspect your pumpkin for injuries. These are pumpkins with bruising, scratches, gouges, dents or damage of any kind. These deformities will affect how you carve and how pleasing you're jack-o-lantern will appear when you're done.

Safety Tip. The stem of a pumpkin can easily break off. Never carry your pumpkin by the stem. If it does break off, use toothpicks or a similarly narrow shaft to hold the stem in place.

Modern Day Carving Tools. The carving tools for a modern day jack-o-lantern are very simple. Most of them you can get yourself right at home.

▪ Pumpkin Carving Patterns. These are stencils, or templates, of images that you could get on the internet. If not, there are booklets or books available at arts and crafts stores, specialty stores or even in a library. Or you could create a stencil from a drawing of your own.

▪ Transfer tool or poker tool. This tool is used to transfer the image from the stencil to the pumpkin's face. You could use the tip of any sharp tool, an ice pick, a nail or even a sharpened pencil or a pen.

▪ Securing the Image. You can use pins, tacks or even tape to hold the stenciled image in the exact place you want.

▪ Two knives. One long, thin bladed knife and one short, thin bladed knife. You can easily get these in your kitchen.

Safety Tip. Sharp knives are safer than dull knives, because dull knives will force you to exert extra force or extra leverage to make clean cuts. Sharpen your knives before you begin carving. The moment it seems like you have to use more force, it's time to resharpen them. Be careful not to assume that your knives will always stay sharp.

▪ Carving saw or cutting saw. A carving saw is mainly for cutting out fine details that would be difficult to do with a knife. But if you'd prefer, you surely could carve the entire jack-o-lantern this way.

▪ Gutting spoons. These are for removing all of the soft flesh from the inside of the pumpkin. Ice cream scoops or thick ladles are great. Any large sturdy spoon or scoop will do. Twenty-first Century Jack-o-Lantern Carving. The first thing is to carve the lid. Use the long knife to cut a pentagon or a hexagon around the stem. As you cut into the top of the pumpkin, make your cuts angle towards each other beneath the stem. You are effectively cutting a cone shaped chunk out of the top of the pumpkin. This keeps the lid from falling in. Your hand and some of your forearm should be able to pass easily through with a utensil. Remove the lid. Now get in there with your gutting spoon and scrape all that soft flesh out. Be thorough.

When the jack-o-lantern is burning bright, you want to know that the candle inside is secure in its setting. Make the floor inside of the pumpkin firm and flat. If you give the pumpkin a little smack on its side, the candle shouldn't move from its position. You'll know what to do.

The easiest place to put the face of your jack-o-lantern is the flattest section on the outside of the pumpkin. Select the stencil for the image you want and place it there. Secure it with pins or tape. If you're using tape and have to crease the paper, try to do it in a section where there will be the least distortion.

Use the transfer tool to poke holes along the lines of your image. Puncture through the image and into the pumpkin's skin just a bit. It isn't necessary to make deep punctures. These holes should be from an eighth to a fourth of an inch spaced apart. In areas where you may be unsure when carving, add some extra dots. The more the dots, the easier the carving. It's all up to you. When you're completely done transferring, inspect the dotted outline. Save the stencil in case you need it for clarification while you're carving.

Take the carving saw and connect those dots. Make sure that the saw is cutting straight into the pumpkin and not at an angle. Remember to use a back-and-forth sawing motion. Don't use it as a knife. Saw all the way through to the inside open space of the pumpkin. For tight corners, remove the saw and reinsert it where the lines connect.

If you have pretty large chunks to remove, you could easily cut them into smaller sections and have them fall off, one after the other. Push the cut pieces with your finger into or out of the pumpkin, whichever is smoothest.

Trim up the edges with your small knife or carving saw. More light will come through the pumpkin if these edges are trimmed at a 45 degree angle or thereabouts. This is great if additional lighting will compliment the image you've just carved.

You are done. Now how can you make your jack-o-lantern last longest? Take some petroleum jelly and coat every exposed surface, everything left after a cut. This will include the entire inside surface of the pumpkin, too. Dehydration is the enemy. Any sign of wrinkling or shriveling can be helped by soaking the pumpkin in water over night. Natural decomposition can be slowed greatly by refrigerating it during the day. This is a bit of work for every jack-o-lantern you make, so try not to carve your jack-o-lanterns too early from when you'll be using them.

Wasn't that fun? Making jack-o-lanterns sure is fun for me. In this day, almost any image could be found on the face of a pumpkin. It just depends on how creative you want to be. Go forth and broaden your mind. Happy Scary!

Auto Battery Charger Bargains From eBay Motors

One of the best places to buy an auto battery charger is from eBay motors. At any given time there are 100 to 200 of these chargers either up for auction or on Buy It Now.  Talk to a mechanic and learn what type of auto battery charger is best suited for your car.  Information to look for is how many amps you’ll need and what brand would work best for your specific car.  Armed with this information, you can then turn to eBay motors.

Some brands that are usually available include Schumacher, Samsung, and Dewalt. The units sold on eBay have an amp range from 2.5 amps to 300 amps and from 6 to 24 volts. As long as you are a registered user you can bid on any auto battery charger.  And if you’re not registered on eBay, it’s quick and easy to do so.

If you don’t need an auto battery charger immediately, you may get a very good deal by going the auction route and bidding on the charger of your choice.  Otherwise, it’s easy to click a Buy It Now button and you’ll be charged the price the seller is requesting for the charger. Be sure to check out how much shipping the seller charges before you bid; and if the seller lives in your state, you will probably be charged tax. Payment is easy and secure through PayPal and some sellers take credit cards too.

If you want to get an idea of what the auto battery charger you’re looking for is selling for on eBay motors, you can do an Advanced Search and click on the Completed Listings box.  All sold chargers will show in green and this will be a quick way for you to see selling prices. It is also recommended that you buy from a seller who has good feedback.  That way you’ll be certain you’re purchasing your auto battery charger from a reputable person.

Lxt Lithium Ion
Why can't I buy a makita drill from america instead of the expensive uk?

Makita 18v Lithium Ion LXT Hammer Drill Kit BHP451

Thats what I want, but I cannot buy (sob sob sob)
I think it is because they are a lot cheaper and the british enjoy getting ripped off
It is a cordless drill and it is 110v on a building site.

The electricity supply in the states is a different frequency. I'll have to look into this a whole lot more. I know Makita won't like it.
110v on a building site in the uk 230v in the domestic dwelling.

Frequency 50Hz

usa 60Hz
I think it is the batteries that cost alot.

Hahahaha! Iv got that exact drill! And I bought it from lowes in Johnson City in America! And I cant find a 230v charger here! -So I have to plug it into a 110v transformer onsite.

You can buy 1 there and you can use it over here just chop the 2pin american plug off the end and put a 16amp 110v plug onto it the hertz over there are different (60hz) compared to our (50hz) but that doesnt make any difference

Make a Better Impact: How an Impact Driver Will Improve Your Driving Capabilities

The power and speed of an impact driver are absolutely unbeartable. For building jobs from decking to home-additions, no job site should be with out one. Where driving screws is concerned, the impact driver is an unparalled force, a titan that will push you and your projects into sweet, triumphant victory. Every woodworker knows the task of screw driving can be trying; you need maximum power and speed and a tool that will secure rather than strip your screws. For this, the impact driver is the missing piece. An impact driver with will put a spring in the step of craftmen everywhere knowing their lives are that much more effecient.

With more force than any other tool, impact drivers are expertly designed to drve screws better. Faster and stronger that standard power drills, they generally deliver a seriously powerful, brutal, forceful 1,300 in/lbs of torque. These tools are designed for durability and conquer even the most daunting driving applications. Even with all this power, its serious strength and brute force, the impact driver still has the accuracy, the finess - if you will- to loosen and tighten screws with out stripping heads. So please, I implore you - say "goodbye" to inadequate, inefficient driving methods and welcome the well qualified, brilliantly engineered impact driver into your life.

If you are a professional craftsmen seeking to improve your driving capabilities and make your work day more efficient, please read on. The Following summarizes DEWALT and Makita impact drivers and a Makita angle impacter driver for close quarter driving.

Sanding Belts

what kind of sander and what grit of paper do i use to paint my car hood?

I need to paint the hood of my car. I got one from a junk yard so needless to say the color doesnt match. I have a belt and palm sander, I also have a grinder. What do you suggest I use to sand off the paint. Thanks

If the paint on the hood is still in good shape just scuff the hood and paint right over the old paint. I would use a red scotch brite pad, but you could use 400 grit. I wouldn't use power sanders unless they are intended for auto body use. Your better off just hand sanding.

Refinishing, Sanding, Staining and Polyurethane a Hardwood Oak Floor

Preparation: Remove the carpet

If you have carpet you are going to have to remove it! This part is easy, just tug on a corner and pull it off the tack board. Cut the carpet in long 3 or 4 food sections using a sharp box cutter. Simply, roll it up and haul it away.

You will be left with your pad. In my case the pad was just stapled down and not glued, so you pretty much do the same thing as the carpet and just roll it up and haul it away.

Once you get all the carpet and pad removed you have to get rid of the staples and tack board. Invest in a good molding removing pry bar. It will look similar to a normal pry bar on one end, but will have an odd shaped other end that is specially designed to pull finishing nails out of tight places. This tool will save you tons of time! As for the staples, pull em out with pliers, it is time consuming but pretty easy.

Preparation: Remove the trim

If you have trim that overlaps the hard wood you will have to remove that as well. This is pretty easy if you bought the molding pry bar. Simply pry it up and remove the finishing nails. Once you are done with all of this you are left with your wood floor and you are ready for the real fun.

Choose a Sander:

Now it is time to rent a floor sander. There are several different kinds that you can rent from Home Depot. They are similar in cost but different in a few ways.

  • Belt Sander: It is designed to take off layers of your floor quickly. This may be best left to a professional since you can screw your floor up the fastest with this one.
  • Orbital Sander - 3 disc: This sander is one of the more common ones, it is easy to use and good for a beginner. It is a bit more aggressive than the next sander.
  • Orbital Sander - square pad: This is the least aggressive but perhaps the most forgiving. Because you will have to make many passes with the sander if you want to really get down to the bare wood this one can be time consuming but good for a beginner. This is the one I used.

Sanding down the floor:

For this tutorial I am going to discuss using a square pad orbital sander since that is what I used. Start with a 30-40 grit sandpaper and slowly make a pass going with the floorboards. You should see the polyurethane and some of the stain come off pretty quickly. The pads don't last all that long because they get polyurethane clumps on them so I went through about 2 pads every 10 by 10 area.

**Note** Vary your pattern. Don't always start and stop on the same place on the floor. It can create a pattern that is noticeable.

Since this one is forgiving you can go over and over the same spots without really digging into the wood too much, so my recommendation would be to go over each spot a couple times back and forth and then move on to the next row. If you get done and you need to go back over it that isn't a problem. Just remember that you are going to use a higher grit (finer) sand paper afterward that will take off some more wood. The most important part is making sure all the polyurethane is off the floor.

**Note** I had some problems because in some of my dents in the floor I wasn't getting all the shine off the floor in every place. But as I went to the finer sandpaper it got almost all of this off.

Since the large floor sander cannot get all the way to the edge you are going to have to use a hand sander with similar grit paper on the edges. This is time consuming and I didn't get mine 100% even, but since I was staining it was going to help cover up my imperfections.

After you are done making several passes of 30-40 grit paper, do the same thing with 60-80 grit paper. This should take less time since you are touching things up.

Finally, you put on your finest sandpaper (around 150 grit). You should only need to go over once or twice and these pads should last about twice as long. I only used two for a 400sq foot area.

Remember to do the edges with your hand sander after each step.

The result

You should be left with a dull floor without any shine and little, if any, stain. The next step is staining and applying polyurethane.

Staining hardwood floor

Before you stain the floor you need to make sure ALL the dust and particles are off the floor and the central air is turned off. First sweep the floor and vacuum what you can up. Then you can wet some cloth rags with mineral spirits and use that as a tack cloth.

Applying stain is easy. I used a stain applicator that attaches to a broom stick. Pretty much wipe it on in the direction of the wood. Do it in sections and then wait about 5 minutes and wipe the excesses stain off with lint free rags. Then move to the next section and repeat.

The process can be time consuming with all the waiting between sections. I did two sections on different sides of the house at a time to speed this up.

Drying time

Once the stain is done you have to wait for it to dry. I used a Cabot oil based stain and it took over 48 hours to dry because there wasn't a lot of ventilation in the house and it was cold and rainy outside. Once the stain stops being tacky in most spots you are probably ready to put your finish on it. Sweep the floor and get up all dust.

Finishing the floor with Polyurethane

If you bought oil based stain then you are going to want oil based polyurethane. Apply it in much the same way you did the stain. I used a lamb wool applicator that connected to a broom stick. Make sure your rinse it out with mineral spirits beforehand or you will get a lot of lamb wool on the floor. Apply it in a light coating and make sure it covers all surfaces. I made two passes with the pad.

Once you get your first coat down the kind I used said you can apply another within 12 hours without sanding. I read nightmare stories about this online. So I would do it the normal way and wait 12-24 hours until it is dry and then sand it down. You can sand it by attaching a find (250-300 grit) piece of sandpaper to a foam mop head and go over the floor lightly. You are just trying to scuff it up so the next layer will bond to the previous layer.

Clean up the dust, I used a micro-fiber fabric and swept it up. Then use your mineral spirit tack cloth to get up fine dust.

Apply your next layer and wait!

Curing time

After your second coat you should be done, all you have to do is wait for the floor to cure. This time varies but the general rule of thumb is that after 2 days you can have light foot traffic on the floor and after 4 or 5 days you can put your furniture back on it. Do not put rugs on it until after a week or more.

Final Notes

After all of this your floor should be done. It doesn't cost all that much compared to a new floor. I spent about $300 in rental fees, stain and other things I needed to do a 400 square foot area.
